Sindre Walle Egeli’s first-time finish in the 62nd minute put the Tractor Boys in front, despite an encouraging performance from Russell Martin’s visiting Leicester City outfit.

Olabade Aluko’s first goal for the Club, flicking on Bobby De Cordova-Reid’s header, got us level just five minutes later, giving us hope of an admirable victory in Suffolk. Our Carabao Cup journey, though, ends at the second round stage as a brace from Marcelino Núñez – including one hit from 40 yards out – settled the tie.

Promising signs

Martin made seven changes to the XI from our first Sky Bet League One defeat of the season at the weekend – a 2-1 home reverse with 10 men to Burton Albion. Conor Chaplin came in to make his debut after a short injury, while fellow new signings Christian McFarlane, Harry Howell and Tommy Watson were also making their first starts for City.

Being newly promoted and riding the optimism of a last-ditch opening-day win over Sunderland, Gary O’Neil’s Town were naturally going to pose a threat throughout – and they did. Chuba Akpom was an issue for the backline, rolling wide early on, before also necessitating a well-timed challenge from Aluko to halt his route to goal. The hosts hit the bar as well when a corner bounced up in the area.

But City, too, created openings, with the style of football on show also a positive. Christian Walton saved well to thwart Tommy Watson early on, attempting a curler into the top corner. McFarlane was played in by Louis Page as well, with the Ipswich stopper needing to bat a hand at his chipped effort.

Aluko nets

The opportunities continued through the first half. Chaplin, playing against the side he helped to three promotions, tried to pick out the bottom corner from 20 yards out, but Walton scampered across his line to make a smart save.

The half came to a close with McFarlane heading inches over the bar, with Martin likely to have been enthused by much of what his side had delivered. When former Fox Kasey McAteer converted from close range, it appeared he’d put Ipswich in front, but the linesman’s flag denied him an opener.

O’Neil’s men advanced just after the hour though, the counter ending with Walle Egeli sweeping a composed finish past Stolarczyk and into the net. Our No.1 was required to smother Akpom’s attempt moments later, but we were level in the 67th minute as De Cordova-Reid got his head on Page’s corner – with Aluko making sure at the post to nod it in for a deserved equaliser. That was the Academy graduate’s first Foxes goal – a landmark moment in his progression to the First Team.

Ipswich win it

We were pushing ourselves, but it was Ipswich who advanced to the third round. Núñez will be hoping to make a mark in the Premier League this term and he impressed on Tuesday night, with his first goal hitting one post and nearly striking the other, but it bobbled over the line and in for the home side.

Watson stung the goalkeeper’s gloves at one end, while Stolarczyk stood up to another big test when Akpom was played through, sticking a strong arm out to make a solid stop. At the other end, Will Alves – fresh from the bench – fizzed an ambitious hit wide, but Núñez confirmed the result with a remarkable effort from 40 yards out, close to the centre-circle, as our Carabao Cup journey came to an end.

We return to League One duties on Saturday, heading to MK Dons for a 12:30pm BST kick-off.
