The Polish ‘keeper reflected on a hard-fought victory in south London
Battling our way to a big three points in the capital, Abdul Fatawu rightly stole the headlines for his stunning strike just after the break, which separated the sides, but it was a real team performance from Martí Cifuentes’ men, who rode a Charlton storm to claim victory. Speaking after full-time, our ‘keeper gave his account of the hard-fought win, bouncing back following defeat at Preston North End by working collectively to gain a much more positive outcome on the road.
“We showed a reaction from last week, especially because we were not on the top of our game,” Stolarczyk admitted, speaking pitchside at The Valley. “Today was all about getting the three points no matter what. It wasn’t pretty but we got them over the line and that’s the most important thing.
“Abdul has shown us what he can do. He has been for the past couple of years, obviously apart from the time with the injury. It was good build up and something that we trained on. It’s something we want to be as a team as well. We’re happy with it.
“I think we showed everything. We were playing for each other and fighting for each other. If one player makes a mistake, there are another 10 that are going to help him out and I think it showed today.
“We can all be really proud of sticking together out there because it’s not an easy place to come and dig out the result, but we’ve done it, we’re all happy and now we’ve just got to recover and move on to the big game next Friday.”
The shot-stopper produced several saves to keep the Addicks at bay and ultimately preserve victory – a first away win of Martí Cifuentes’ reign as City Manager – but he was keen to praise the backline in front of him for their contributions to the clean sheet.
“I think it would be close to double figures for the blocks from my defenders as well,” the 24-year-old told us. “There were a lot of blocks on the line and I think it showed that spirit and togetherness and being a team together.
“That clean sheet and win is not only on me. Obviously, I’m there as a last line of defence and I’ve got to be there to help them, but they helped me a lot today as well.
“I had to be ready for any sort of situation. I managed to drop into my goal and be ready for a shot and luckily I saved it. There were still another 70 minutes to play and that one save was on me but there was a lot more in this game which we can all be proud of.”
Sitting seventh in the Sky Bet Championship table at this early stage of the season, Stolarczyk believes the team will take confidence from the manner of the victory, heading into facing Birmingham City back at home on Friday night.
The Academy graduate added: “It gives us a lot more confidence that we can go out there and play a game in tough places like this and it will be one of the toughest places in the league.
“It will be a fortress for them so getting that confidence going into these sort of places that if we stuck together, and play like we did today, even when it’s not pretty and we had to dig deep, we can do it.”
