The experienced defender has spent the last 12 years at Newcastle United, playing a key role in their rise from the Sky Bet Championship to credible Premier League contenders, with a new opportunity now on the horizon at King Power Stadium.
Lascelles, who has also skippered the Magpies, can’t wait to get settled in on Filbert Way, outlining why making an impact off the pitch is just as important as what he intends to do on it. Bringing leadership to a squad which blends youth and experience is on our new No.24’s to-do list, as he told us during his first LCFC interview on Deadline Day.
“I’m just buzzing to get through the door,” he said. “It’s a great set-up here, a huge Club, the facilities are fantastic. I just can’t wait to help out as much as I can, try and push up the league, and meet all the boys tomorrow (Tuesday).
“I’m definitely going to add high standards, professionalism… for me, they’re non-negotiable. It’s the one per cents every day, dragging myself and other people on board and just keeping high standards.
“If you do that in and around the building, on the training pitch, it’ll carry onto the games.
“It’s quite a young squad, so I feel like, with me being 32, I’ve been in similar positions before in my career, in the Championship, so there’s not much I haven’t seen. I’m just hoping to bring my experience and add to everybody here.
“There’s some great talent. I’ve been keeping my eye on Leicester for a while. There’s some fantastic talent in the team.
“There are some young players that might need a bit of guidance, might need an arm around the shoulder, might need a firm hand.
“That sort of stuff goes a long way in football, having leadership, and that sort of stuff behind the scenes can carry onto the pitch.”
Taking pride in the basics of defending – winning duels, keeping clean sheets – while embracing his role as a leader, Lascelles is now excited to meet the squad this week.
“I’ll give my all,” he explained. “I’ll run through a brick wall for the Club in every single game, every single session. I’m quite athletic and quite commanding in the box.
“I enjoy defending, I enjoy winning my duels, and I try and pride myself on keeping clean sheets and doing my job. I try and get the best out of other people as well.
“It’s important I do my job, but if I can help other people and encourage them, sort of take on other peoples’ stresses, I just want to help out as much as I can.
“It’s very exciting [to join Leicester]. I’ve been at Newcastle for a long time, since I was 21. It’s not often that players stay at clubs for that long. I had some great memories there.
“I’ve seen the ups, the downs. It’s a great set-up there, but I’m here and it’s a new chapter. I can’t wait to get started. Like I said, I want to win games, I want to get back to playing football and enjoying playing games, helping out as much as I can.”
So, with reported options elsewhere, why Leicester City? Lascelles says he’s here to help us ‘push up’ the Sky Bet Championship table, while also relishing the chance to play regularly.
“It’s local to me, my parents are around the corner, my family and friends are here,” he added. “Obviously, the football as well, it’s a huge Club.
“They probably should be higher than where they are and I want to help them try to kick on and start winning games and push up the table.
“That’s all I want to do, play regular football. I’m really looking forward to the challenge, meeting the team, meeting all the staff. Since I’ve come in so far, everyone’s been really friendly and welcoming, so I can’t wait to get started.
“We’ve had some big games over the years against Leicester at home and away. I actually think I’ve played against [Andy King] quite a few times.
“They’ve always been a good side. Years ago, when there was Wes [Morgan], [Riyad] Mahrez and [Jamie] Vardy, they were always really tough games.
“It’s a special club, with a good fanbase, amazing facilities. I want to come here and just help out as much as I can and push up the table.
“I’ll give my absolute all every time I cross the white line. Not just that, but in and around the building, it’s important to drive the standards, try and improve the one per cents every day.
“They do go a long way. I’m buzzing to be here and just can’t wait to get started.”
