Jamie Vardy reached his 200th Leicester goal on his 500th and final Foxes appearance
James Justin reflected on his team-mate’s achievements after setting up the strike
The 2-0 home victory over Ipswich Town wrapped up our home schedule for the season
It’s now two wins and a draw from the last three Premier League matches
Signing off with a goal on his 500th and last LCFC appearance, it was a landmark 200th in Leicester blue for the talismanic striker, who was set up by Justin himself, producing a lung-busting run from inside his own half before slipping in Vardy, who, typically, never looked like missing.
That put the Foxes 1-0 up inside half an hour at King Power Stadium and Kasey McAteer doubled the lead with a second-half strike that wrapped up the 2-0 success, creating the perfect ending to Vardy’s unrivalled Leicester City story. “It’s obviously an amazing achievement for him (to score 200) and to be a part of that over the last few days,” the full-back commented, speaking post-match. “Especially today, to get the last one is obviously a pat on the back for me.
“He was going to make a movement sooner rather than later and when he made the decisive move, it made it easy for me. I just supplied him and he did what he does. It was just one of those, he was always going to score, there was no stopping him.
“Before the game, he was as calm as ever. He just took it in his stride like every other game and we knew he was going to. We tried our best to get him to this milestone and we’re happy we’ve played a part in that.”
Saying goodbye to a player who has given so much to the Club, it was a fitting way to bow out, but Justin admitted there will be a strange feeling around not having a player who has been present throughout his own Foxes career to date.
Justin was presented with our 2024/25 Goal of the Season award on Sunday, for his stunning strike at Arsenal.
The 25-year-old continued: “He’s been a massive figure at the Club since I’ve joined and to lose such a big, influential player and person in the dressing room and around the training ground every day is going to be a tough pill to swallow.
“Someone has to step up and fill that void and I feel like we have the players to do that. Today is a day just to celebrate him and what he has done for this Club. He deserves it.
“He’s played in so many teams over the years and had so many team-mates. To be one of those and be a part of his time at Leicester is incredible and I’ve learnt a lot from him.”
City have collected seven points from a possible nine in recent weeks, registering back-to-back home victories, with a credible draw at Nottingham Forest sandwiched in between wins over Southampton and Ipswich.
Ending a disappointing season with some better performances and a couple of clean sheets, Justin feels there have been some positive steps in the right direction since our relegation from the Premier League was confirmed last month.
“For the past month or so I’ve felt a confidence within the team and on the pitch we’ve been more together and everything feels more connected,” the defender added.
“I’m not sure what it was, maybe a small confidence [boost] after having a weight off our shoulders, because there was a definite lack of confidence within the squad.
“Since then, we have been playing okay football and being together as a team and we’ve been getting a couple of results. Hopefully we can take that into the last game of the season and into next season.”
