Things are starting to heat up in the Barclays Women’s Super League with the race for survival still on following Crystal Palace’s win over Aston Villa last weekend, halving the deficit to Leicester who sit 10th in the standings.
Following two difficult tests on the road which ended in defeat to Manchester United and Chelsea, our German shot-stopper is looking to home advantage, which has played a part in back-to-back WSL wins on Filbert Way in the last two home matches. “I’m so looking forward to that game because I think it gives us more energy, more support from the fans as well and the whole team just loves playing at King Power Stadium,” Leitzig stated in her interview with CITY. “It’s so special.
Looking forward to a home return.
“But I think you can see that in the performances - we always play better at home, which is nice because most of our fans are there and of course for us it’s extra motivation to give them the best performance we can do.
“The next two games are really important for us because we need more points in the league. It’s always an extra motivation to play at King Power Stadium and we want to give our best at home.”
Sunday’s opponents currently sit fifth in the league with as many wins as losses, following a productive season under new manager Dario Vidošić.
“They (Brighton) are having a good season,” Leitzig continued. “They play really good attacking football, score a lot of goals and even compete with the top teams of the league.
“But we’ve already played twice against them this season and it was a really tight game, both of them were. In the league, I remember we lost 1-0 and, in the cup, we won on penalties so we know we can beat them.
Working hard at Belvoir Drive.
“But we know that we need a really good performance and that’s what we’ve looked at this week to focus on ourselves to get the best possible performance. I’m confident that we can get points from that game.”
Outlining her targets for the remaining six games of the season, four of which are on Filbert Way, the former Bayern Munich goalkeeper wants continued progression from her side, and ensure that they retain their top flight status come the end of May.
“We want to get some more points to be out of the relegation battle - that’s the main goal and the main focus,” City’s No.1 added.
“I think we can see that our performances have improved since the beginning of the season, I would say, and we want to continue that.”
