Fresh from gaining vital experience on loan at Tranmere Rovers last term, the 20-year-old is eager to make the most of his opportunity back with the Foxes after moving up from the Development Squad.

Starting to get up to speed as the new season moves into view, the peak fitness levels which City’s players are working towards have provided a solid base for our rigorous summer schedule, with fixtures against Cádiz CF and Málaga CF to come next.

“I’ve really enjoyed it,” the Manchester-born youngster revealed, sitting down after another intense training session in Seagrave last week. “It’s been tough, a lot of running, a lot of hard work, but it’s been enjoyable.

“I’m feeling good within myself and I feel like the rest of the team’s feeling good as well. Even though it’s a lot of hard work, it’ll benefit us in the future.

“I’d say this is probably the hardest pre-season I’ve done. From Under-21s, it’s a massive jump, because you’re trying to impress as well, so you work extra hard.”

Appointed last month, Russell Martin quickly put his stamp on things, with Joseph finding those methods a breath of fresh air, instilling confidence that he can be given a chance to thrive in this team by putting the work in, reaching the required levels and showing the desired quality.

“I feel like the style of play really suits me,” the full-back said, analysing the opening weeks under the new Manager and his philosophy. “I'm enjoying working under him and his ideas. He's got banter; to be fair, I’ll give him that!

“[He gives me] so much belief and the way he is with us as well, he gives us a lot of confidence, so I feel like he really allows us to shine and show what we can bring.”

Joseph is not alone in sharing that belief of breaking through and playing a role in the upcoming campaign.

A host of Academy graduates have featured across pre-season matches so far, creating a fairly unique situation where several of the squad previously played alongside each other in the Under-18s or Under-21s set-up and are now moving into First Team contention.

Entering the potentially intimidating atmosphere of a senior dressing room has been made much easier by being alongside their peers, mind you, combined with a welcoming environment created by the senior pros in the group.

“I think the pathway is so good,” he told us. “It shows with how many players have come through the Academy and who are classed as senior boys now. And there's so many more that are on the verge of coming through to the First Team.

“It makes you feel more comfortable. Seeing the people you've come up with, you're obviously going to be more comfortable with them, so it's a good feeling around the group.

“Everyone's comfortable with everyone and the senior boys are really helpful as well. Everyone's really together, so it helps a lot. They're really showing us the way of how to help the younger boys, so we should pick that up really quick as well.

“For the younger boys, personally I think it's a big opportunity to show what you can do and try to cement yourself in the team. It could go well for a lot of the young boys, including myself.”
