John worked for the Club with Martin O’Neill in the latter half of the 1990s, as Leicester City won promotion to the Premier League, achieved four successive top-10 finishes, lifted the League Cup on two occasions and participated in the UEFA Cup.
That link with former team-mate O’Neill started at Nottingham Forest and continued into coaching, with Wycombe Wanderers, Norwich City, Leicester City, Celtic and Aston Villa – a career in the dugout which earned John the respect of many across the game.
It was his time as a left-sided winger for which John is possibly best remembered, helping Brian Clough’s Forest rise from the second tier to win major honours, most famously back-to-back European Cups, alongside the old First Division title in 1978. John’s spell at Forest included two of their four League Cup wins during that period.
His status in the game is forever assured due to his impact in both of Forest’s triumphant European Cup Finals, first assisting the winning goal in 1979 before netting the decisive goal in the second showpiece just a year later.
Born in Uddingston, Lanarkshire in January 1953, John also earned 28 caps for Scotland, famously scoring the winner in a victory over England at Wembley in May 1981.
He was a larger-than-life character at Filbert Street between 1995 and 2000, acting as the perfect foil for O’Neill during a successful era in our Club’s story and as a link between management and players. John will always be remembered at Leicester City Football Club as a key part of one of our most celebrated and successful eras.
On 26 December, for our home match against Watford, our players wore black armbands as a mark of respect and remembrance to pay tribute to John’s impact at the Club. We send our deepest condolences at this sad time to his wife, Sharyl, daughter Liz and sons Andrew and Mark, as well as granddaughters Jess and Phoebe.
