The 20-year-old Wales international, who joined up with his country immediately after signing on loan, reported for his first day at LCFC this week – and was full of positivity as he prepares for the weekend’s Sky Bet Championship trip to Oxford United.
He said: “It’s been really good to see the lads, but also just being around the facility and it’s a big old place! I’m just getting my bearings with everything but the lads have been really good. They’ve welcomed me with open arms and we can’t wait to get started.
“[The people are] very friendly. The staff, the chefs, everyone’s been really helpful. I want this to be my home so I need to be familiar with the people and the place and I feel like that’s slowly happening.”
His move came with a whirlwind schedule, heading straight into international duty with Wales. Two appearances, though, for the Dragons has added to his 25/26 minutes and he feels ready to contribute for the Foxes when called upon.
“It was weird,” he added, on leaving for internationals straight after signing. “The day was a very long day with the medical and waiting to sign. When it happened, you’re so happy, but then you go straight to Wales. I was a long process, for my family as well, not knowing where I’m going to settle, where I’m going to stay, but I’m happy that I’m here now and I just can’t wait for the weekend to hopefully get started and have a big season.
“It was a good [international] break. We won our first game away at a tough place (Kazakhstan) and then we had a friendly at home against Canada which I thought we were the better team [in]. They scored a free-kick but for me, personally, it was a good camp. I needed to get minutes so for me it was massive. I feel fit, I feel ready, and I’m sharp. I had a full pre-season. I just didn’t play the first game for Rennes and that was about it. I’m ready to go whenever called upon.”
Now, his focus turns to Leicester and working under Manager Martí Cifuentes: “I’ve had a few chats with him. We’ve already built quite a good relationship. The way he wants me to play is very similar to the way I play at Wales. That benefits me in the sense of me going in straight away already knowing what I’m doing. It’s just the little things he wants that I need to work on and hopefully, when it all comes together, it can pay off.”
Above all, James is clear about his motivation in joining the Foxes. Having always admired the Club from afar, he’s eager to help us climb the league.
“It’s been very positive,” he explained. “The whole move process was really positive. It’s somewhere I always wanted to be. I said it in my last interview, I’ve always just had a feeling about Leicester. It’s a place that should be in the Premier League and hopefully us as a team and the staff can do that for the whole club.”
