City require one more win to record a highest-ever WSL points tally
Just four games remain in the Barclays Women’s Super League campaign and, for City, there is an opportunity to register a highest-ever points tally since top-flight promotion in 2021 by picking up at least three more points.
The first of those fixtures sees Amandine Miquel’s side visit Emirates Stadium to face the Gunners on Tuesday (7:30pm BST kick-off), as the French defender eyes a first away success of the season before the season comes to a close.
With three straight wins recorded at King Power Stadium earlier this calendar year, and being unbeaten at King Power Stadium since mid-November, it is about converting that form on the road with a trip to Crystal Palace also to come.
Earning a point against Spurs last time out.
“I think we have had two big moments in the season,” the centre-back explained. “The first part was really difficult with a lot of injuries and also a new Manager and new ideas we all needed to adapt to that. The injuries were a big part too. “Now we understand better where we can start the press; we’re recognising the best moment to press. We are being more efficient. We needed time for everyone to understand that. We are getting there but we can still improve some stuff. When you see the results from the first part of the season to now, it is better so we should keep going.
“We managed to go through and still get a few points and then after Christmas we understood the game plan and adapted to the league and had some great results. We are in a position now to almost be safe, which is the most important thing for us.
“When you start the season, you always hope you will fight for the first position and this year has been quite difficult and we’ve been in this battle. To be in this position now in this moment is great for us.
“It’s in our hands so we just need to get some points. We still need to play Crystal Palace and we’re seven points above which is good for us. We could be safe in the next game.
“As a player, I always want to win, but if we can break records, it’s good. When you’re at the bottom of the table, you want to look up. We want the maximum points that we can and we have a good mentality.”
Narrowly beaten in our previous two away fixtures at Chelsea and Manchester United, the Foxes are still taking plenty of confidence to north London to face another of the WSL’s top three sides in one of the country’s most impressive venues.
“In football, sometimes you play well and don’t have the result but you need to still take the positives from each performance and look to improve,” the 26-year-old continued. “Sometimes, things don’t go right and you can have a bad day. If you can do it against the big teams in the league, it’s even more credit for you.
“We always try and stay positive and look forward and I’m really excited for this game. With Leicester, we always play at King Power Stadium but it’s nice to play away in big stadiums. Even more with Arsenal, they have a lot of fans. We want a good result and it’s also one of the reasons that I came to England.
“In this league, anyone can beat anyone. We didn’t win any [away] game for the moment, but we want to go for it. Arsenal maybe can be focused on preparing for Lyon. We will be aggressive; we will want the ball and we will want to score. I’m sure all of the players are ready to fight and win the game.”
Readying for the Gunners.
Regularly involved as part of a backline which has conceded just 27 times this term – only the top four have let in fewer goals - partnerships across the back four have been a key factor in a series of strong defensive displays, Thibaud believes.
“At the beginning, when you don’t have the result that you want, it’s always difficult,” the former-Bordeaux star admitted. “But as a team, we knew we would win some games because we’ve got talent in the team. In the backline I trust everyone, so it’s easier for me to play with them.
“I know that they will win their duels and do good passes and I can be focused on my job and that’s the main point. You can be better because you don’t have to be focused on others. That’s what we’ve improved this season.
“We trust each other from playing more together. We’ll keep going and be ready for the last four games.”
