Kasey McAteer reflects on Friday's 3-1 friendly reverse to FC Köln
The Academy graduate found the net for the Foxes in that clash in Graz
He says learnings can be taken from the match as City prepare for more work in Seagrave
McAteer is also looking forward to tackling Fiorentina at King Power Stadium - tickets
Strikes from Sebastian Sebulonsen and Luca Waldschmidt gave the German outfit a two-goal lead early on in Graz, although McAteer did pull one back before Florian Kainz added a third late on.
It was City’s second game of the day on Friday, following a 2-1 success over FC Karpaty Lviv, and although they can point to the minutes earned and the fitness gains made, McAteer was frustrated with the result nevertheless.
“It was a tough game,” the Academy graduate said afterwards. “I think we were a bit passive in the first half. We didn’t really get the game plan right to a tee.
“We were up against a good side as well. In the future, we’ll learn lessons from today to go into the next game against Fiorentina at King Power Stadium.
“It’s a day to forget, but at the same time, it’s pre-season, you can’t look at results. We’ve had some good results in the previous games. Obviously you want to win every game, and to our standards, that wasn’t good enough today and the result showed that.”
McAteer’s goal in Graz follows a maiden Premier League strike just before the end of the season. Looking ahead to next season’s Sky Bet Championship campaign, the 23-year-old is eager to start adding more goals to his tally throughout 2025/26.
“I feel like if I’ve got a chance in front of goal, I’m going to score,” he added. “That’s like every forward, it’s about getting in those positions.
“Today I got in that position, which is good, but I want to get in more positions. I don’t just want to score one goal, I want to score two or three in a game.
“I want to keep striving for me, that’s in my blood, my DNA, I want to keep getting better and improving day in and day out. I’ll keep practising those things and hopefully more will come in the end.”
Leicester will shortly return to work in the UK, building up to next Sunday’s test against Fiorentina, the final friendly ahead of the new season.
“We’re looking forward to that game, I think everyone is,” McAteer explained. “Especially being back home at the King Power Stadium.
“We’ll be on the training pitch to put in some hard work, get the Manager’s ideas across onto the field, and make sure that when the first whistle goes next Sunday that we’ll be ready for a big battle.”
