Our Sky Bet Championship campaign begins on Sunday against Sheffield Wednesday
Kasey McAteer is excited to get going after a productive pre-season
He’s been impressed by Manager Martí Cifuentes’ first weeks in charge
Sunday’s opener brings optimism and intrigue for the Foxes
The Academy graduate has been a prominent feature of pre-season under Martí Cifuentes and is hoping to be involved during Sunday’s Sky Bet Championship curtain-raiser against Sheffield Wednesday – a 4:30pm BST kick-off at King Power Stadium. Despite finding ourselves back in the second tier, there is an air of optimism around the camp heading into another season, with a new Manager bringing fresh ideas.
“He comes from a good footballing background and has some good ideas – the boys are really buying into it,” McAteer told CITY, the official LCFC programme, this week.
“He’s been really direct with us and said what he wants and expects from us. Now it’s down to us to deliver on the pitch. Him and Xavi [Calm] have both come in and had a really good effect on the boys. We’re looking forward to seeing where they can take us this season.”
After a nine-day camp in Austria, the lads have been back in the UK for the final stretch of pre-season, overcoming ACF Fiorentina 2-0 on Filbert Way last weekend. That time spent with team-mates has been beneficial, says McAteer, who’s eager to get started now.
“It’s good when you get away,” he added. “It’s good because you’re together as a team with the staff all the time and you can really build bonds. We’ve got a lot of different ideas on the pitch and we were doing double sessions in the days.
“We had a couple of games which was good as well but it’s all about the Manager getting his ideas across and putting them into practice on the training pitch. Obviously in pre-season you’re learning lots of new ways of playing so it’s nice to now have a clear understanding of what the Manager wants. Come the weekend, hopefully we can deliver the work we’ve been putting in on the pitch.
“I’m really looking forward to [the Sheff Weds game]. It will be an exciting afternoon for us players and the fans to kick things off. Hopefully we can get the three points to set us up for a good run.”
