LCFC Women beaten in WSL Play-Off on Saturday afternoon
Charlton won 2-1 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes
The result confirmed our relegation to WSL2
Rick Passmoor reacted to the loss at the Valley
It was a heartbreak ending to the season for City, who were relegated to the second division for the first time in five years after losing to Charlton in the first-ever WSL Play-Off. Speaking first of all on the game, the Manager was pleased with elements he saw from the performance in the London heat, but admitted the finishing touch was lacking to get a positive result ahead of the shootout.
“At times we played really well,” Passmoor stated. “We dominated the ball in the second half, but we knew they were organised, so we did well to get a foothold on the game.
The game went to penalties, after a goalless 120 minutes.
“Today, both teams came into it on low confidence because of the second half of the season, but I thought we played well and the subs had a good impact for us.
“We need to take our chances, and maybe needed a bit of individual magic, because we have to test the ‘keeper more than we did - we worked the ball enough to do that.
"We knew we had to move the ball quick, because we knew they were solid in their shape, but we had to be more ruthless than we were today.”
Relegated to the second tier, where we haven’t played since our title win in 2021, Passmoor admitted it was a big challenge which was inherited at the start of the season.
Going on to talk about what must be rectified this summer to ensure a positive WSL2 campaign, he believes it starts with having the right culture within the squad.
We were beaten 2-1 on spot kicks.
“We come into a challenge,” our Manager continued. “But it was a challenge we wanted to take on, at a superb Club, with a great fanbase and staff, and what we’ve got to do is learn for the season ahead.
“We need to take stock, and take a look at the short future, sit down and have a review of the season, and what we need to do as a club to align with our principles to drive culture which will then drive performance.
“Since day one when I walked in, the fanbase has been with the Foxes and loud everywhere we’ve gone, all over the country.
“We need to make sure we readdress this and give them some good times because it’s been a challenging season and they’ve stayed behind us.
“They’ve put everything into supporting us and you could see that today. Imagine when we’re back on the trail and winning, they’ll be delighted so I want to thank the fans.”
