In her final press conference of the season, Miquel addressed a final challenge of the season, when West Ham come to King Power Stadium this Saturday, and how she reflects on her debut campaign, managing in the Barclays Women’s Super League. With our top flight status already confirmed, Miquel spoke about how she wants to end on a high, in front of the Foxes faithful who have been so supportive all year long.
‘We didn’t control the game well enough’
O'Brien's goal against Palace last time out wasn't enough to see out three points.
But first, the former Stade de Reims Manager looked at last weekend’s draw to Crystal Palace and the feelings of scoring in injury-time, only to concede the win once more, four minutes later.
“We were a bit upset at the end of the game last week,” Miquel admitted. “We didn’t control the game well enough, and we didn’t react well enough after we scored to make it 2-1.
“I think the players want to do better, but we’ll face a different opponent who are in good form at the moment.
“We want to finish the season strongly at our own stadium which has given us luck and it’s a place where we have performed best.
“I want to finish on a high but even if it has an unsatisfying ending, I want the team to learn and take the positives from this season.”
‘More to come’
Saturday's match concludes a first season on the touchline for Miquel.
After this weekend, the French Manager will have completed her first season in England, and it’s fair to say it has not been without its challenges.
“I’ve had struggles in my first season here with injuries to our squad,” the Manager continued. “People will look at the table and judge but I know we have more to come.
“We’ve confirmed safety in the league but we are far away from our end goal and where we want to be so we want to have the chance to start fresh next season.
“When you go through the struggles of picking a team with no offensive players like we have done at times, it makes you reflect on how you have to manage.
“Any hard season is a season where you learn a lot but we’ll look at the detail and the times we did well because we need to analyse that as well.”
‘Stick to our defensive principles’
Commending our defensive rigidity.
Forced to play without a recognised striker for large parts of the season, Miquel and her coaching staff have utilised the time to focus on defensive stability.
Happy with the progress made in that aspect of our game, Miquel hopes to see it come to fruition on Saturday afternoon in order to break a record-high points tally in the WSL.
The Manager added: “Their project, and game plan is very similar to ours; the only difference this season has been the injuries.
“We’ve played 19 out of the 22 games this season without an out-and-out striker and they have quality in Viviane Asseyi and Shekiera Martinez, but if they didn’t have those options up front they could be closer to us in the table.
“If we were more fortunate with injuries, I think we would’ve been more like them and higher up in the table.
“Defending is one factor we have worked hard on, and we want to stick to our principals on that this weekend and try to limit their occasions as much as we can.”
