What started out as a turbulent season, City withstood the storm of constant injuries to end on a high, breaking 20 points to finish 10th in the Barclays Women’s Super League and secure a fifth consecutive term in the top flight.
Our run of form at King Power Stadium, especially, was to be celebrated; five wins and two draws in a debut campaign for Amandine Miquel which saw us lose only once on home soil to a team outside of the top four.
LCFC Women 1-1 Chelsea
Our first-ever point against Chelsea.
While we finished with a record amount of wins, one of our more impressive results of the season, and one we wanted to start with, was actually a draw; against the champions-to-be Chelsea.
A side that have won the last six WSL trophies, we had never managed to take a point off the Blues, until December 2024 when the scores ended 1-1 on Filbert Way.
In a quirk of fate, Missy Goodwin, who netted our only goal 20 minutes in, wasn’t named in the starting line-up, nor did she finish the game, but she had one hell of an impact in-between.
Rounding off a free-flowing counter-attack which ended with Asmita Ale picking out Goodwin unmarked at the back post, it gave us the lead for just shy of an hour, before Wieke Kaptein’s equaliser.
Not a win, but one of the hardest fought, and deserved points, in our WSL history.
LCFC Women 3-2 Brighton & Hove Albion
The three goalscorers against the Seagulls.
Fast forward to late March, when we stood at a total of 12 points in the league, and we welcomed Brighton & Hove Albion to Filbert Way, who themselves were on for a record finish in recent years.
An incredible first half from the Foxes saw us go into the break three goals up. Shannon O’Brien opened the scoring before Saori Takarada bundled a second home just after the half-hour mark.
French winger, Shana Chossenotte, who joined the previous summer from Stade de Reims, then made it three on the brink of half-time.
Madison Haley and a penalty from Fran Kirby brought Brighton back into contention, leading to a nervy finish, but heroics from Janina Leitzig in the Leicester net ensured the three points.
LCFC Women 4-2 West Ham United
The season finale offered a last chance to hit the magical 20, and break our points tally record. But it wasn’t going to be easy, as West Ham were on a good run, with only one loss in their prior six games.
But just like the Brighton game, we started strongly, taking the lead through skipper Janice Cayman just nine minutes in, before Hannah Cain doubled our lead 10 minutes from the interval.
Viviane Asseyi, who scored twice against the Foxes during our pre-season tournament in Perth, Australia, pulled one back for the visitors, but Cain was on red hot form, and scored her third in two games with a delightful chip over the ‘keeper.
Asseyi’s direct free-kick pulled the Hammers back closer once more, but Sam Tierney’s phenomenal strike from range, after spotting Kinga Szemik off her line, rounded off our campaign in the best possible way.
A record fifth win and a new height reached in terms of points, it was a dream ending as a new era in our history continues to be written.
