Goals from Matthew Dennis and Kgaogelo Chauke put the visiting side in a commanding position before Oliver Skipp’s red card made it an uphill battle for Russell Martin’s side, who pulled one back through Wes Burns on the stroke of half-time, but were unable to conjure up an equaliser.

The Foxes had picked up a point at Notts County on the opening day but are still searching for a first Sky Bet League One victory having lost out to the Brewers on Filbert Way.

It’s a trip to Ipswich Town up next in the Carabao Cup Second Round on Tuesday night (7:45pm kick-off), before Milton Keynes Dons await next Saturday (12:30pm kick-off), as league duties return.

Early Burton breakthroughs

It took just five minutes for the visitors to break through, with Kyran Lofthouse sliding in Matthew Dennis to finish past Foxes home debutant Alex McCarthy, before wheeling away in front of the 1,000 Burton fans in the east corner of Filbert Way.

Leicester looked to hit back through Olabade Aluko, in the starting XI in place of Jayden Jospeh, with Aluko's powerful drive from the edge of the box looking to be heading towards goal until young Spanish midfielder Sulyman Krubally got his body in the way.

Harry Souttar’s header from a Luke Thomas corner was then easily claimed by Corey Addai, but it was the away side who came on strong again via opening goalscorer Dennis, who, coming in at the back post to meet Jack Armer’s whipped cross, saw his effort deflected.

He would be involved again in Albion’s second as his blocked shot fell for Chauke, who fired the ball into the far left corner.

Back in it

On the half-hour mark, Oliver Skipp was shown a straight red card for his challenge on Curtis Tilt, leading to Hamza Choudhury’s early introduction. Liam Cullen was the attacking midfielder sacrificed.

As Leicester adjusted to the numerical disadvantage, Burton sensed another opening and after Charlie Webster cut inside and curled one wide, McCarthy had to get down quickly at his near post to deny the 22-year-old’s first-time effort, before a third Webster strike soon after was also dealt with by our ‘keeper.

However, we did manage to halve the deficit shortly before half-time through Burns’ close-range finish, sliding in to get on the end of a Will Alves cross which was flicked into his path by Burton defender Finn Delap.

Alves sent one high and wide from the left as we searched for a quick-fire equaliser which wasn’t to come before the break.

Second half pressure

Tommy Watson, Harry Howell and Bobby De Cordova-Reid were all on 10 minutes into the second half as Martin looked to breathe new life into our attack. Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Howell, on his home debut, looked dangerous from the off, bending a free-kick around the wall which was beaten away by Corey Addai.

De Cordova-Reid was the next City substitute to try his luck from a central free-kick, sending it just wide, while captain Harry Souttar headed a Luke Thomas free-kick onto the roof of the net.

Gary Bowyer’s Burton might have extended their lead had Webster kept his effort down after a defensive error, and the no.8 also tested McCarthy, forcing another save out of the former England international.

The home crowd was soon on its feet for Watson’s effort, which crashed into the side netting after the ball fell for him inside the box, but that was as good as it got for the Foxes as we slipped to defeat.
