First-half goals from Sonny Carey and Lyndon Dykes saw Nathan Jones’ side establish a commanding lead against our 10 men, following Caleb Okoli’s early sending off, which would ultimately prove enough to claim victory.
After the break, Jordan Ayew’s missed penalty might have handed us a route back into the contest, but the first game of First Team Coach Andy King’s spell overseeing the squad ended in defeat.
Next up, we’re due at St. Andrew’s for a meeting with Birmingham City on Saturday 6 February (3:01pm GMT kick-off).
First half frustrations
Leicester City
Very little went our way in the opening 45 minutes. Okoli was shown a straight red card a quarter of an hour in for hauling down Miles Leaburn, who was set free on goal, though still had plenty of distance to cover.
There had been one change from last weekend’s home defeat to Oxford United, with Luke Thomas coming in for Jannik Vestergaard, and there would soon be another reshuffle as Bobby De Cordova-Reid was sacrificed to bring on defensive cover in the form of youngster Olabade Aluko.
A first warning sign came when Carey’s corner was headed in by Harry Clarke, a goal swiftly disallowed for a foul on the ‘keeper.
The goals
Ricardo Pereira
The Addicks would not be denied on 36 minutes. Clarke’s cross, flicked over Ricardo Pereira with Carey’s first touch, he then volleyed home emphatically with his second.
And while we tried to apply pressure to find an equaliser, with Harry Winks - on as a substitute for the injured Hamza Choudhury - hitting wide, it would be Charlton who seized on their man advantage once more to double the lead.
After Luke Chambers had a strike saved by Jakub Stolarczyk, he turned provider for Dykes, who didn’t have to break stride to meet the cross and flick it into the opposite corner, four minutes into first-half stoppage-time.
Missed opportunities
Leicester City
Despite their numerical advantage, it didn’t take long for Charlton to be put on the back foot in the second half as City came out with intent. Adbul Fatawu’s cross initially fell for Winks, whose effort was blocked by Jones, and Louis Page’ strike went the same way, stopped in its tracks by former Fox Conor Coady on his return to Filbert Way.
Apart from Stolarczyk collecting substitute Matt Godden’s shot, it was, for a spell, all one-way traffic as Ben Nelson headed Luke Thomas’ free-kick over the bar, prior to Fatawu winning the penalty.
Skipping past Amari’i Bell and into the box, where the Jamaican defender decided to pull him back, Ayew’s resulting spot-kick sent Thomas Kaminski the wrong way but it cannoned back off the post.
Ricardo’s low shot from edge of box was soon spilled by Kaminiski, but neither Page nor Ayew could capitalise. The shot count was racking up, but to no avail. A late swing of the boot from Page landed narrowly over and from there, the points were Charlton’s.
