The event highlighted the importance of empowering young people to have their voices heard and shape activity within their communities
The event was spearheaded by participants from Leicester City in the Community’s Hidden Heroes programme and Youth Shadow Panel, giving young people the opportunity to play a leading role in bringing their ideas to life and creating a celebration for their community.
Held at the home of Leicester City Football Club, the event provided a welcoming space for people to come together, celebrate Navratri and share in the traditions and culture that form an important part of Leicester’s identity.
For Tina Shah, Hidden Heroes Project Coordinator at Leicester City in the Community, the event highlighted the importance of giving young people the opportunity to take the lead.
“This event highlighted the power of young people when they are trusted to lead. Seeing them step up with such enthusiasm, confidence and responsibility was inspiring, and it reinforces why creating opportunities for youth leadership is so important.
As part of the Young Carers and Hidden Heroes programme, we are committed to engaging, inspiring and empowering young people to reach their potential, while ensuring their voices are heard and valued. It was also wonderful to see people from across the community come together, demonstrating togetherness, respect and pride, while building meaningful connections and celebrating the diversity that makes our communities stronger.”
Empowering young people to make a difference
The event was shaped by participants from the Hidden Heroes programme and Youth Shadow Panel, who helped to develop and deliver the celebration.
Through these programmes, young people are given opportunities to share their ideas, have their voices heard and play an active role in creating positive change within their communities.
The Navratri celebration provided a platform for participants to put those skills into action, helping to create an event that reflected the culture, traditions and experiences of people across Leicester.
One Hidden Heroes participant, 16-year-old young carer Meera, commented:"It's amazing to see how an idea I had four years ago has grown into something that brings so many people together. As a Hindu, it makes me really proud to share my culture and traditions with others, while also learning about different backgrounds and experiences.
Being part of Hidden Heroes has helped me become more confident and believe in myself. As a young carer, opportunities like this mean a lot because they give us a chance to connect with others, develop new skills and make a positive difference in our community. Seeing everyone come together to celebrate, learn and support one another was really special."
The opportunity to lead the event also allowed participants to develop confidence, work as part of a team and see the impact their ideas could have on their community.
The Hidden Heroes programme is made possible by the Premier League and Professional Footballers’ Association Players’ Fund.
Administered through the Premier League Foundation, the funding helps football club charities and player foundations to work with players to tackle inequality and respond to local challenges, supporting people and their communities to be more inclusive.
Celebrating the diversity of Leicester
Navratri is a significant Hindu festival which brings people together through celebration, tradition, music and dance.
For Leicester City in the Community, the event was an opportunity to celebrate the people and cultures that make Leicester such a diverse city.
More than 167 people attended the celebration at King Power Stadium, creating an opportunity for families, participants and members of the local community to come together and enjoy the occasion.
The event also demonstrated how the power of the Leicester City badge can provide a platform for communities to celebrate their identity and create connections with others.
By bringing the celebration to King Power Stadium, participants were able to create a welcoming environment where people could feel a sense of belonging while celebrating an important part of their culture.
Through programmes such as Hidden Heroes and the Youth Shadow Panel, Leicester City in the Community continues to create opportunities for young people to have their voices heard, develop their skills and help shape their communities.
The celebration was a reminder that there is always a place for everyone at Leicester City in the Community, with King Power Stadium providing a home for communities to come together and celebrate.
Leicester is our home, and its diversity is what makes our community stronger.
