The Forest Foxes programme supports young carers, care-experienced young people and other vulnerable young people
10 girls from Years 4–8 took part in the residential
Activities included low ropes, pedal go-karting, outdoor learning and a visit to Charnwood Forest Alpacas
100 per cent of participants said they felt safe and supported during the experience

A recent residential gave 10 girls from Years 4–8 the chance to build confidence, develop friendships and experience new activities in a safe and supportive environment, providing an opportunity to step outside of their usual environment and spend time together while developing important skills and positive relationships.

During their time at Conkers, the group took part in low ropes, pedal go-karting and outdoor learning activities, while also exploring the National Forest. The girls were encouraged to work together throughout the experience, with activities helping them develop communication, problem-solving and teamwork skills.

The group also enjoyed an African acrobatic show, providing an opportunity to experience something new together and create positive memories as a group.

The residential continued with a visit to Charnwood Forest Alpacas, where the girls enjoyed meeting baby alpacas and piglets.

In the evenings, the group took part in a range of team-building activities, including Traitors, arts and crafts, and a marshmallow and spaghetti tower challenge. The activities encouraged the girls to communicate, support one another and work together in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.

Tilly Higgs, Education Development Manager at Leicester City in the Community, discussed the impacts of providing opportunities for vulnerable young people.

"This residential was a fantastic opportunity for vulnerable young people from Leicester to experience the National Forest, with some visiting for the very first time," she commented. "Through a range of outdoor activities at Conkers and a memorable visit to Charnwood Alpacas, the young people were able to challenge themselves, overcome fears, try new experiences and build meaningful social connections.

"We are incredibly grateful to the National Forest Company for their generous funding, which enabled these young people to access opportunities they may not otherwise have had and create lasting memories along the way."

The feedback demonstrates the importance of creating safe spaces where young people can try new things, challenge themselves and build positive relationships with others.

Through Forest Foxes, Leicester City in the Community continues to use the power of sport and positive experiences to support young people, helping them build confidence, strengthen relationships and create memories that can have a lasting impact beyond the programme.
