Leicester City in the Community are set to deliver a new community-led programme in the city
This will include regular multi-sport sessions for people of all ages and backgrounds
The programme will be ran alongside Leicester City Council, the Active Partnerships Network and local communities

Using Sport England's Multi-Sport Strategic Fund, LCitC will deliver a new community-led programme that will activate PlayZones across Leicester's priority neighbourhoods, delivering regular multi-sport sessions and community activities that create more opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to get active close to home.

Working alongside Leicester City Council, the Active Partnerships Network and local communities, the programme will help ensure Leicester's new and improved PlayZones become thriving, well-used spaces that support healthier, more connected neighbourhoods.

PlayZones are safe, inclusive and accessible outdoor facilities designed to bring communities together through recreational football and a wide range of other sports and activities. They can be booked free of charge through the ClubSpark online booking system and feature timed floodlighting and secure gated access to help ensure they remain safe, welcoming and well managed.

The investment comes as Leicester City Council continues to roll out its successful £1.8 million PlayZones programme, creating and enhancing facilities in neighbourhoods where access to quality places to play and be active is needed most.

Existing ball courts have already been transformed into PlayZones at Atlas Close in Highfields, Eyres Monsell and Spinney Hill Park. Refurbishment work is continuing at Armadale Drive in Netherhall and Cossington Recreation Ground in Belgrave, while four new PlayZones are being developed at Elston Fields in the Saffron area, Hamilton Park, Mowmacre and Sharmon Crescent in Braunstone Frith.

The new programme will deliver a varied package of sport and physical activity that extends beyond traditional football. Activities will be co-designed with local residents to reflect community needs and interests, creating welcoming environments that encourage people to be active now and into the future.

Matt Bray, Head of Programmes at Leicester City in the Community, said: "This investment gives us a fantastic opportunity to work alongside local communities and bring these PlayZones to life.

"By offering a range of activities shaped by local people, we can create welcoming spaces that help more residents become active, build confidence and enjoy the benefits of sport and physical activity."

Cllr Vi Dempster, Assistant City Mayor for Health, said: "Our PlayZones programme is creating high-quality community facilities in areas where they are needed most.

"This partnership with Leicester City in the Community will help ensure these spaces are well used, giving residents more opportunities to be active, improve their wellbeing and strengthen community connections, providing a lasting legacy for Leicester."

Alongside the PlayZones programme, LCitC is also working with Leicester City Council to deliver community activities at a number of multi-use games areas (MUGAs) across the city, including Orchardson Avenue, Overton Road and Rally Park.

These facilities have been upgraded through a separate £2.1M citywide investment programme to provide new and refurbished MUGAs and ball courts, further increasing opportunities for local people to be active in their communities.
