  • Leicester City in the Community to launch two mental health cafés
  • Cafés located at De Montfort University and the University of Leicester
  • Free support will be provided to those who need it, whether students or staff
  • Contact Rukhsana.hussain@lcfc.co.uk for more information on the upcoming project
In partnership with De Montfort University (DMU) and the University of Leicester, the organisation will open a series of University Mental Health Cafés; welcoming, informal spaces designed to provide free mental health support and a sense of community on campus.
The cafés, which will run twice a week at each university, are open to all students and staff. They aim to offer a safe, relaxed environment where people can take a break from academic pressures, talk openly about their mental health, and find support without fear of judgment.
Whether someone is experiencing ongoing challenges or simply needs a moment to pause and talk, the cafés provide a space where everyone is welcome.
The primary focus of the drop-in sessions is to deliver immediate, non-clinical support for anyone who may be struggling. Attendees will have the chance to speak with trained staff, share their concerns, and receive practical advice to help them manage their mental wellbeing more effectively.
Beyond simply offering a listening ear, the cafés will signpost visitors to helpful coping strategies, wellbeing resources, and relevant support services — empowering them to take small, meaningful steps toward feeling more in control.
For those who need more personalised assistance, one-to-one support will also be available. These private sessions can offer more tailored guidance and, where appropriate, help connect individuals to further pathways of care, including university counselling services or specialist mental health support.
All sessions are delivered by trained Leicester City in the Community staff, who will be there to support anyone facing mental health challenges. Their role is to create an inclusive, compassionate space where people can talk openly about what they’re going through — whether that’s anxiety, stress, loneliness, or anything else affecting their wellbeing.
This initiative builds on Leicester City in the Community’s ongoing commitment to supporting mental health across the city. By collaborating with two of Leicester’s leading higher education institutions, the programme aims to make a real difference to the lives of students and staff — promoting early intervention, reducing stigma, and helping more people feel that they’re not alone.
