Leicester City’s Wout Faes lined up in defence as Belgium maintained their unbeaten start to 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying with a 4-3 victory over Wales on Monday night.
The game wasn’t without any drama after Craig Bellamy’s side pulled back three second-half goals, but Kevin De Bruyne’s late winner saw the Red Devils triumph at Stade Roi Baudouin.
Having drawn 1-1 with North Macedonia in Skopje, where Faes was also a starter for Rudi Garcia’s side, Belgium are third in Group J on four points, but with two games in hand on the two teams above them.
The Red Devils remain unbeaten.
Fellow Foxes defender Jannik Vestergaard played in two friendly wins for Denmark, coming off the bench to help his nation beat Northern Ireland 2-1 at Parken Stadium last Saturday evening, before starting as the Danes put five past Lithuania without reply on Tuesday.
Earning his 55th international cap, the centre-back featured throughout the 5-0 success in Odense, helping to keep a clean sheet during what was a morale boosting week ahead of September’s World Cup qualifiers.
Staying in Europe, McAteer scored his first goal for the Republic of Ireland on his maiden start as they drew 1-1 with Senegal in a friendly at Aviva Stadium on Friday.
Taking just 21 minutes for the Foxes winger to find the back of the net for Heimir Hallgrímsson’s side in Dublin, converting at the second time of asking, a late leveller denied Ireland victory.
It then ended goalless in another friendly against Luxembourg, with our Academy graduate starting once more at Stade de Luxembourg, gaining valuable experience on the international stage.

Wilfred Ndidi's Nigeria beat Jamaica 5-4 on penalties, following a 2-2 draw during normal time, to win the 2025 Unity Cup, while young defender Brandon Cover was unused from the bench for the Reggae Boyz.
Jordan Ayew’s goal, meanwhile, helped Ghana to finish third in the tournament, played at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium.
Lining up as the captain and number nine for the Black Stars, it took Ayew just six minutes to find the opener against Trinidad & Tobago, before assisting the following two goals in a 4-0 victory.
Earlier in the tournament, the pair had faced off against each other, with both Ndidi and Ayew named in their respective starting XI’s as Nigeria came out on top 2-1.
Over in Africa, Bilal El Khannouss made two friendly appearances for Morocco at Complexe Sportif de Fès, named in the starting XI for a 2-0 victory over Tunisia. Playing 58 minutes, the attacking midfielder then came off the bench for 20 minutes of action in a 1-0 success against Benin.

Coulibaly was the latest City star to make an impression with his nation as he debuted for Mali against DR Congo at Stade de la Source in France, losing out 1-0 in the friendly fixture.
Moving across to Asia, Choudhury scored his first goal for Bangladesh on only his second appearance, converting a powerful header after six minutes in Dhaka, leading to a 2-0 win over Bhutan at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Then playing another 90 minutes in a 2-1 reverse to Singapore in an AFC Asian Cup qualification match; this result leaves them third in Group C with one point after two games.
Finally, Development Squad striker Chris Popov was captain for Wales Under-21s in their 4-0 defeat by Norway Under-21s – the visitors scoring twice in each half during the international friendly.
