Sheffield United’s visit to King Power Stadium on Saturday is the first of seven Sky Bet Championship outings between now and the end of December. It’s another tough test too, as Chris Wilder’s Blades begin to rectify a slow start to the campaign with two successive wins over recent weeks. But Cifuentes, who also spoke with admiration for our visitors, is eager to focus on his own team ahead of the 12:30pm GMT kick-off on Filbert Way.
‘Make sure the team improves’
By continuing to work daily with the squad on the small details, performances will improve and that will be reflected in results – that’s the Manager’s view.
“The most important thing is to focus on ourselves,” he told the media on Friday. “Obviously, the position in the table, it helps to understand where you are in terms of performances, but you see how tight and how competitive this division is.
“You understand the small [details] are so important. For us, it’s very important to look at ourselves and how we can improve our level during the games, how we can keep that consistency during the games and from game to game, and that’s where my focus is.
“Obviously we don’t want the difference between the top of the table and us to increase, just the opposite, but at the same time, the most important thing for me is to make sure the team improves and then it will reflect in the table.”
‘They are in a good moment’
Two 3-0 wins – one away at rivals Sheffield Wednesday and another at home against Portsmouth – have helped Wilder and Sheffield United begin to rewrite the narrative in south Yorkshire.
Albeit still 21st in the table, but now looking upwards, they’re a side which is likely to pose a serious test of Leicester’s qualities this weekend, Cifuentes believes.
“They’re a team that started the season probably not in the way they wanted,” he added. “Then an experienced manager who knows the club really well comes back.
“The team has definitely improved over the last games. They have players who know this division really well and, actually last season, many of them had a very strong season in the same league. They are now in a good moment after these last results.
“They’re a team that has changed slightly from how they were playing two months ago. It’s very important that we understand where their strengths are. They’ve got some players that are performing at a good level at the moment, but at the same time, we know when we play at our best we can be a very strong team.”
‘We’ve got a good balance’
Fusing youth and experience could prove key for City this term with an array of professionals being supported by an emerging group of Academy prospects.
“I think we’ve got a good balance with a lot of experienced players who can bring that at important moments of the games and the season,” he said.
“I’m happy with all of them. I’m happy as well with the energy that we’ve got from the young players. We’ve got a lot of Academy players that this season are having good seasons, or getting their first minutes.
“Some others maybe had minutes last season and are having a more established year for them, like Louis Page, like Jeremy Monga, like Bade Aluko.
“There are many that are giving us this balance into what I think is an important season for us in terms of everybody contributing in the best way. In the case of experienced players, definitely they will help us as they have been helping the young players this season."
