In just the second minute, former Foxes striker Tom Cannon put the south Yorkshire visitors in front, a lead which was doubled just three minutes later when Callum O'Hare's strike was diverted goalwards by Jaïro Riedewald.
Sydie Peck then picked the ball out of the air on the volley to make it 3-0 to Chris Wilder’s men just after the half-hour. Into the second half, though, Leicester rallied as Mavididi’s 53rd-minute header and then a long-range James strike, with seven minutes to play, gave the home side hope of a comeback. Time, though, got away from Martí Cifuentes’ men, who are now 15th in the Sky Bet Championship.
The Blades take control
Leicester City
It was a tough start to the early-kick on Filbert Way. United, resurgent after two consecutive wins before this visit to Leicester, squeezed the hosts back into their own half from the off. City couldn’t settle on the ball and it dropped to Cannon in the box to convert in front of the Spion Kop to give the Blades an early lead.
That was just two minutes in and, another three later, it was 2-0 to the Sheffield outfit. Callum O’Hare fired through a busy goalmouth on the half-volley, with Riedewald getting the final touch on its way past Asmir Begovic.
Another Harrison Burrows corner was the route to a third. Jannik Vestergaard headed it out of the box, but it was sent crashing back towards danger by Peck, who watched his volley glide into the bottom corner.
Working a way back
Martí Cifuentes
There were moments where Sheff Utd could have even added more to their tally before the interval. Cannon’s shot on the stroke of half-time was deflected behind by former team-mate Harry Winks, while Riedewald was slipped in by O’Hare, but he blasted inches wide.
There was a lot to do at the break and Cifuentes turned to his bench. Oliver Skipp, playing at centre-back, was one of three incoming changes. Boubakary Soumaré and Jordan Ayew were the others charged with helping to turn the tide.
City were pushing up with more intent in the second half. Fatawu’s header was diverted behind within seconds of the restart after good wing play from Bobby De Cordova-Reid, one of three players returning to XI after Tuesday's 3-0 reverse at Southampton. This was the sort of pressure Leicester needed to forge a way back.
Not quite enough
Bobby De Cordova-Reid
In the 53rd moment, the door crept open on a possible Leicester fightback. Fatawu’s cross from the right channel was deep and Mavididi burst free to get a head on it, sending it crashing past Michael Cooper and under the bar to give the Foxes hope.
A long-throw from Luke Thomas caused havoc in the Blades area as well, hooked goalwards by Vestergaard but Riedewald was able to get his head on it and alter its route – originally destined for the far back corner. When Soumaré and Skipp combined to rob Patrick Bamford of possession in the middle, it was released quickly to James and he did the rest, smashing his boot through the ball and wrong-footing Cooper.
There was just a solitary goal between the sides with seven minutes of normal time and another four added on, but as the game became stretched, Sheff Utd dug in to see out a third win on the bounce. From the depths of the first half, Leicester had come close to rescuing something from it, but it wasn't to be.
