Liam Millar and Joe Gelhardt both struck inside half an hour at MKM Stadium, with Martí Cifuentes’ men responding through Aaron Ramsey after the break, his second goal in as many games, though the second half fightback wasn’t enough to take anything home from Humberside.
It leaves us eighth in the league table ahead of heading to The Den to face Millwall on Saturday (3pm BST kick-off), our third game in eight days.
An early setback
Harry Winks
Hull hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the Foxes in recent years, lasting tasting victory at this ground in 2014, and it was the Tigers who started on the front foot in this encounter.
Millar’s low cross found its way to Kyle Joseph, whose effort ricocheted back off the post before Jakub Stolarczyk claimed. That was a warning sign for what was to come and Hull were soon ahead.
Gelhardt aimed to find Matt Crooks in the middle, who slipped, but that allowed the ball to roll kindly for Millar to send a first-time strike into the top corner just six minutes in.
Missed chances costly
Jordan Ayew
A Foxes response was required and opportunities quickly presented themselves. Wout Faes headed wide before an even better opening arrived. Jordan Ayew, back in the XI this evening, barely had to break stride to meet Luke Thomas’ cross into the box, though the Ghana forward could only divert wide of target.
Captain on the night Hamza Choudhury then beat ‘keeper Ivor Pandur to the ball, but Patson Daka was unable to turn his cross home, with Semi Ajayi back on the line to make a goal-saving interception.
Sergej Jakirović’s side soon had their second. After Joseph’s header from a Ryan Giles cross was saved, the full-back swung in another delivery that Gelhardt turned in at the back post just after the half-hour mark.
One back but not enough
Aaron Ramsey
Jeremy Monga and Ramsey were both introduced for the second half and it was the latter who brought us back into contention with just over 20 minutes to play. A brilliant finish from the Burnley loanee saw him lift the ball over Pandur and into the far corner after good hold up play from Ayew, just three days on from scoring against Portsmouth on his home debut.
A quick-fire equaliser was on the cards once Fatawu weaved his way into the area, firing just over the bar, before Ramsey had a close-range chance which looked to be heading in until Ajayi got the vital touch.
Hull themselves could have made it more comfortable, twice calling Jakub Stolarczyk into action, and that left the door ajar. Into stoppage time, an inspired Fatawu created an opening for Winks and Pandur could only watch as his strike crashed against the bar, much to the frustration of the 1,575 travelling Foxes fans. We go again on Saturday.
