Easter Sunday's test against the champions-elect could prove pivotal at both ends of the league, with Liverpool lifting the title, should Arsenal lose to Ipswich Town.
Focusing on the now, with one eye on the future development of the team, van Nistelrooy discussed the upcoming clash on Filbert Way with the media at LCFC Training Ground.
‘We needed that performance’
Celebrating a first Leicester City goal.
Leicester picked up their first point since late January, when they came from behind twice to draw with Brighton & Hove Albion; Caleb Okoli notching his first City goal. Pleased with the fight and resilience shown to get something from the game, the 49-year-old wants to build on the performance displayed on the south coast.
“We spoke about breaking the cycle and it was important that it ended up being a spirited performance, and the connection with the away end as well was important to us achieving our goals,” van Nistelrooy stated.
“We were pushing to win the game and ended it very strongly; we wanted to take a victory for the team, but we also needed the performance which we had, so it’s something to build on.”
‘His consistency is incredible’
Salah has 45 goal involvements this year.
There’s not many games that come tougher than Liverpool, with an in-form Mohammed Salah, who recently penned a new contract at Anfield, leading the charge in attack.
The former Manchester United striker spoke about the Egyptian, and the work that Arne Slot has managed to achieve in his debut campaign.
“They way they have been playing,” he continued. “The general quality of the squad is very balanced, and in their positioning also, with the strength they have.
“Of course, Salah’s form has been a huge factor in them achieving their goals and being where they are now.
“He’s a winger, so scoring 27 and assisting so many is a remarkable feat but it’s his consistency that has been incredible. He’s been doing it now for more than a decade with his level of fitness so it’s elite standards he’s setting and proving every week.
“I also think Arne [Slot], with his assistants as well, have done a tremendous job in their first season and being in this position to be able to win it.”
‘Looking to the future’
Featuring for the First Team.
Van Nistelrooy kept the focus on the current season, rather than looking towards what might happen in the next, but did speak on his desire to build a future for Leicester City, starting with the next generation coming through the ranks in Seagrave.
“I’m focusing on managing the team and getting the best out of ourselves,” he added. “I’ve mentioned before about fighting until the end, but it’s now about building for the future.
“We’ve got Academy players with us on a daily basis, two made their debuts, and shaping our future development.
“But there’s also young players in the squad such as Stephy Mavididi, Kasey McAteer and Luke Thomas that are part of the future of this Club.
“That’s what I’m focusing on right now and everything else that unfolds, will take that as it comes.”
