  • Captains of our Men’s and Women’s teams recently joined staff at Leicester Samaritans to learn about the role they play in supporting our community
  • Leicester Samaritans speak to over 32,000 people every year, being there to talk over problems, feelings, stress or anything that might be worrying them
  • This visit comes as part of Mental Health Awareness Week
  • Whatever you’re facing, Leicester Samaritans are there to listen - call free day or night on 116 123
Ricardo, who will depart the Club this summer after eight years of service, and LCFC Women skipper, Tierney, each headed down to the Leicester branch, which was founded in 1964, listening to people of all backgrounds seven days a week ever since.
Leicester Samaritans
Leicester Samaritans provide confidential, emotional support to those in need of a safe space to talk over problems, feelings, stress or anything that maybe worrying them, especially those in extreme despair. Their 130 trained volunteers respond to over 32,000 contacts annually - broadly the same as King Power Stadium's capacity - for support by phone, email and face to face visits in branch.
As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re highlighting some of the resources which are available to our people across our area. Leicester Samaritans is one such service, offering non-judgemental and free support in our city.
Ricardo, captain of our Men’s team, said: “It’s been great to meet the staff at Leicester Samaritans and learn about the work they do in our area. It’s hard sometimes for people to reach out to their closest ones, so knowing they have an option here to call – that people will talk to them and hear them above all – that can make all the difference.”

As well as taking a tour of the facility, based in the heart of Leicester, Ricardo and Sam sat down with staff to discover some of the challenges they face and to learn why talking can be such a useful avenue to fixing problems and preventing them from escalating.
Women’s team captain Tierney added: “The main thing I took from it was to listen. When you get caught up in life, sometimes you aren’t actually, truly listening, but being present and listening to people is so important. Today has reminded me that I have those feelings and emotions as well. As a person, I’m always trying to put a strong face on, but having the right support around you is something I’ll take into life and hopefully it’ll help with my family and those around me.”

Dave Alexander, Director, Leicester Samaritans said: “My fellow Samaritan, Sharon, and I were delighted to welcome Sam and Ricardo to the Leicester branch of Samaritans. It gave us a chance to share how our volunteers work, providing a listening service to people in their time of need.
“Samaritans nationally has over 20,000 volunteers spread across the charity and in over 200 branches. Leicester is one of only seven that stay open 24/7. We are proud of our branch and the people of Leicester, who give up their time to volunteer.
“During the visit, we had a chance to show Ricardo and Sam around the branch and meet a couple of volunteers who were on duty.

“Nationally, every 10 seconds, a call will be answered by a Samaritan in one of our branches. The calls range from someone who is feeling depressed to someone who is contemplating taking their own life. Sadly, every 90 minutes, the time of a football match, a person in the UK will take their own life. Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy.
“We are really excited to work with Leicester City as we believe it will raise awareness of Samaritans and the need for people to support each other.”
Samaritans are there to help. Call free day or night on 116 123.
