It was a tale of two halves on Filbert Way. Divine Mukasa marked his full debut with a goal inside 10 minutes, shortly before Patson Daka doubled our lead. It was three when Abdul Fatawu fired in ahead of the break, but it would still be the Saints taking the points.
Ross Stewart reduced the arrears, with defenders Jack Stephens and then Ryan Manning also on the scoresheet for the away side. A stoppage-time Shea Charles goal completed the turnaround and saw the Saints seal victory.
On top at the break
Southampton were presented with the game’s first real opening, and it came with just a few seconds on the clock. Léo Scienza fired the ball across to Cameron Archer, diverting a first-time effort over the crossbar. After an early let off, Leicester started to attack.
In from the start after a substitute appearance at the weekend, Mukasa’s forceful challenge allowed Daka to pick up a loose ball; the Zambian opting to let fly from just outside the area, though his curling shot lacked the precision required to test Daniel Peretz for the first time.
Roles were reversed for the opener. Stephy Mavididi provided the set up for Daka, who laid off Manchester City loanee Mukasa to take a touch before planting the ball into the bottom corner. Despite the ‘keeper getting a touch to it, Mukasa was not to be denied.
It wasn’t long before Daka made it two. A willing runner, his persistence paid off, intercepting a loose back pass before rounding Peretz and firing past Welington on the line. It was his second of the season and first since November.
Fatawu’s fine hit made it three. Once Harry Winks won possession, few would even attempt such a strike from an audacious angle, but there was no stopping it once it left the outside of the Ghanaian winger’s boot.
Forced back
The Saints came out strong after the break. Half-time substitute Stewart flicked in Scienza’s cross to claw one back on the hour mark, getting in front of Caleb Okoli at the near post. Asmir Begovic then had to be alert collecting Finn Azaz’s low shot as the pressure began to mount.
But just as the tide was turning in Southampton’s favour, Daka almost capitalised on Stephens’ weak header, though was unable to lift the ball over Peretz.
With 10 to play, the Saints had real hope. It came from captain Stephens, who fired into the roof of the net to make it a grandstand finish. Manning had done well to keep the ball alive and Begovic could only palm it into the centre back’s path, who did the rest. He soon had a chance to level the contest, dragging his shot wide.
Late drama
Manning would be the one equalise. Like the first, Scienza created it, with the full-back on hand to apply the finish inside the box with three minutes of normal time still remaining.
Into stoppage-time, Begovic’s stop, keeping out Azaz, looked to have prevented a sensational comeback, but Tonda Eckert’s side would not be denied. With virtually the last kick of the game, another substitute, Charles, curled one into the far corner after exchanging a one-two with Azaz.
