For more than 40 years, LOROS has provided free, high-quality palliative and end-of-life care to those across Leicestershire and Rutland, supporting over 2,500 patients annually.
Their work not only brings comfort and dignity to patients and families at the most difficult of times, but also plays a crucial role in easing pressure on the NHS.
Yet despite growing demand, the Hospice is facing a significant challenge.
The inpatient ward at LOROS has capacity for 31 beds. However, due to funding constraints, only 24 are currently open, leaving seven beds closed, not because they aren’t needed, but since they cannot be staffed.
Club Historian John Hutchinson provided a talk to patients, bringing in some LCFC memorabilia from years gone by.
Behind that number are real people - patients who could be receiving specialist care to manage pain, regain comfort and in some cases even return home.
Without access, many instead face unnecessary suffering and a more rapid decline.
The demand for hospice care is only increasing, driven in part by an ageing population, and while the need grows, funding has not kept pace.
It costs around £200,000 a year to open and staff a single hospice bed with specialist nurses and doctors - yet this is still cheaper than an equivalent hospital bed.
Like many hospices across the UK, LOROS relies heavily on public support. Just 27 per cent of its funding comes from the NHS, with the majority raised through donations and fundraising efforts.
That makes initiatives like Saturday’s dedicated fixture vital in helping to secure the future of its services.
Former Foxes captain Ali Mauchlen visited the Leicester-based Hospice.
The Blue Army will have the opportunity to play their part by backing the appeal to reopen the remaining beds and ensure no one has to wait for the care they need.
Staff and volunteers from LOROS - alongside mascot Lionel - will be bucket collecting around the ground and in our Fan Zone ahead of the game, so we encourage fans to kindly donate what they can to the cause.
Supporters can also donate by texting LOROS followed by an amount to 70480, helping to fund specialist care for those facing the end of life.
For example, if you would like to donate £5, text LOROS5 to 70480.
Please note texts will cost the donation amount plus one standard network rate message.
