The lettering underneath the crest indicates that the shirt had been specially made for the Hillsborough replay. It differed from the goalkeeper jersey worn in the drawn final at Wembley 10 days earlier by the omission of the word ‘Wembley’.
The actual shirt illustrated here was worn by Kevin Poole who was the substitute goalkeeper that night at Hillsborough. A key figure in the City goal, he played in the 1993 Wembley Play Off-Final. He was the Player of the Year in the 94/95 Premier League season.

He played in 51 of the 53 games in the 95/96 campaign which ended so dramatically in the Play-off Final at Wembley against Crystal Palace when he was replaced in the 119th minute by Zeljko Kalac in anticipation of a penalty shoot-out. However, a shoot-out was avoided by Claridge’s goal four seconds from the end of extra-time.
The next season, Kevin lost his First Team spot to USA international goalkeeper Keller, who was signed from Millwall in August 1996.
Kevin was transferred to Birmingham City in August 1997. The shirt design lasted until the end of the 97/98 season. The alternative GK shirt for the period 96-98 had the same pattern but with pink instead of green and purple instead of black.
