Leicester City won the League Cup in 1964, 1997 and 2000. We also appeared in the 1965 and 1999 Finals. Graham Cross, Muzzy Izzet and Gerry Taggart, who were all League Cup winners for City, have kindly loaned their winners’ mementoes to the Club’s Heritage Collection.

When Leicester City won the League Cup for the first time in 1964, the competition had only been in existence for four years. To reach the final against Stoke City, Matt Gillies’ side had defeated Aldershot, Tranmere Rovers, Gillingham and Norwich City in the earlier rounds before beating West Ham United 6-3 in the two-legged semi-final.
Until 1967, when they moved to Wembley Stadium, League Cup finals were contested over two legs, home and away. In the first leg, on 15 April 1964 at Stoke’s old Victoria Ground, Leicester were lucky to escape with a 1-1 draw, after Davie Gibson’s 78th minute equaliser earned the Foxes a 1-1 draw.

This result set City up for a 3-2 victory at Filbert Street a week later when Mike Stringfellow, Davie Gibson (with a rare header) and Howard Riley scored the goals that won the cup. After the game, the victorious players were each presented with a tankard rather than a medal. It is engraved with the words, ‘The Football League Cup. 1963-64 winners’.
The tankard illustrated here was awarded to Graham Cross, who went on to play a Club record 600 games for the Foxes. These included another League Cup Final in 1965 and two FA Cup Finals, in 1963 and 1969. His tankard is currently on display in reception at King Power Stadium.
Muzzy Izzet’s League Cup Winners’ Medal

This gold medal belongs to Muzzy Izzet, a key player in the Martin O’Neill’s sides which played in three Wembley League Cup Finals. These were in 1997, against Middlesbrough, in 1999, against Tottenham Hotspur and in 2000, against Tranmere Rovers. We won the first and last of these finals.

The 1997 Final at Wembley against Middlesbrough ended in a 1-1 draw, after extra-time. The medal was presented to Muzzy on the night of the Hillsborough replay 10 days later, when Steve Claridge’s extra-time goal finally secured the trophy for the first time since 1964.

The medal was manufactured by the long-standing firm Vaughtons of Birmingham, who in addition to making the medals for the 1908 White City Olympics, have also been making medals for the Football League since 1911.
Gerry Taggart’s League Cup Winners’ Medal

Northern Ireland international defender Gerry Taggart played in two League Cup Finals for Martin O’Neill’s side. In 1999, he was in the Foxes’ team which was defeated in the last minute at Wembley by Tottenham Hotspur. A year later, he played in the victorious City side which lifted the trophy when Matt Elliott’s two goals defeated Tranmere Rovers 2-1.
This League Cup winners medal, manufactured by Vaughtons of Birmingham, with its green presentation box and medal ribbon, was presented to Gerry after the 2000 Final.

The Roman numerals for 40 are XL and these appear at the top of the medal to commemorate the fact that this was the 40th League Cup Final since its inauguration in 1960. An image of the League Cup appears on the front of the medal, with ‘Winners 1999-2000’ engraved on the reverse side.

The 99/00 season was Gerry’s best season at Filbert Street. In addition to winning the League Cup, he made 44 league and cup appearances, helped Leicester City to eighth place in the Premier League, was Leicester City’s Player of the Year and captained Northern Ireland.
