Caleb Okoli’s goal a quarter of an hour in was enough to see us get up and running under new Manager Russell Martin with a win and clean sheet, securing our spot in the second round of the competition, which will be played during the week commencing Monday 24 August.

Our Sky Bet League One campaign, meanwhile, starts against Notts County next Saturday, facing the Nottingham-based outfit away from home in a 12:30pm BST kick-off at Meadow Lane.

Debutants make their mark

During a busy transfer window of ins and outs, one summer signing was named in the starting XI by Manager Russell Martin - Liam Cullen the man handed his competitive debut and almost a goal to boot, while fellow new recruits Wes Burns and Tommy Watson both looked bright emerging from the bench with an hour on the clock.

Harry Souttar captained the side and partnered Okoli at the back, while Jayden Joseph made his First Team debut at right-back. Fellow Academy graduates Sammy Braybrooke and Will Alves were involved from the off, too, the former making his first senior start, alongside the more experienced Luke Thomas.

Going ahead

There was a major chance inside 30 seconds for our League Two visitors, Harvey Saunders with it, but Jakub Stolarczyk was able to get back and make a diving save to prevent any early drama.

Quickly into a rhythm, a delightful ball from ex-Swansea City midfielder Cullen showed the quality he can bring to the team, almost picking out Alves’ run at the back post, but for Town left-back James Maxwell sliding in to divert it behind.

Thomas provided the subsequent corner which led to the opener. Okoli rose highest to get his head to the ball and, via a double deflection, latterly off Janoi Donacien, it fell into the back of the net.

The away side might have levelled matters when Elliott List ran at the City defence, playing in Connor Lemonhaigh-Evans, who fired across goal before captain Jon Guthrie diverted the subsequent corner wide.

A headed opportunity also fell our way – Braybrooke heading Skipp’s first-time cross wide following quick feet from Alves.

Seeing it out

There was, initially, little threat from Chris Hogg’s Northampton in the second period, other than Tyrese Fornah’s strike from range, and we looked relatively comfortable, although unable to extend the advantage further.

Okoli, from range, struck an effort over the bar and had another saved by Zach Jeacock, who also denied Bobby De Cordova-Reid from a tight angle.

Cullen was then denied a sensational debut goal by a late offside flag being raised by the assistant referee after his piercing left-footed drive flew into the top corner.

Olabade Aluko might have made sure of victory in stoppage-time, though despite some late pressure on our goal, it mattered little that he was unable to find the target.
