  • We head to Portsmouth on Saturday (12:30pm kick-off)
  • Manager Gary Rowett provided fitness news on our squad
  • Jordan James returned from injury last time out, coming off the bench
  • Aaron Ramsey has been a long-term absentee since late last year
Named on the bench for last weekend’s Sky Bet Championship defeat to Swansea City, James made a substitute appearance for the final 17 minutes at King Power Stadium, featuring for the first time since a heel injury picked up on international duty last month.
And ahead of meeting the South Coast outfit at Fratton Park on Saturday (12:30pm kick-off), our Manager gave us the latest update on the Welsh midfielder.
“We’ve no fresh injuries but we’ve got a couple we’ve got to monitor to see how they are,” the 52-year-old explained. “It’s just one or two of those players. JJ is the main one. His heel has still been sore and a bit problematic, which is why I didn’t start him at the weekend.

“There’s every chance we might still be in that position for Saturday. The challenge is with the injury that he’s got; it’s a sore heel. Every time he tries to come on for 20 minutes or trains, it irritates it. Sometimes that sets him back a couple of days.
“He feels good. He has to train of course to be available because we have to know he’s fit and can get through periods of the game. That maybe sets him back a little bit again. He could wake up and feel absolutely fine. It’s not a serious injury.
“It’s just a timescale thing and whether he can do himself justice coming on the pitch. That’s vitally important and also what will the impact of that be? Does that mean he’ll then be a doubt for Tuesday? It’s all those decisions that we’ll make with the medical team.
“Coming back from Wales, he was really positive. The last few days have not quite been as positive, just because it’s been lingering around and he can still feel it. I’m sure in two or three days’ time, he might wake up one morning and it feels absolutely fine with this type of injury.”
Burnley loanee Ramsey, meanwhile, is awaiting his first minutes of 2026 due to a hamstring complaint, but we could yet see the attacking midfielder back on the pitch before the end of the season.

He continued: “Aaron Ramsey is back training, so we’ll assess when we think he’s fit enough to be involved. Of course, he’s another player like JJ who has goals in him. You want plenty of options on the bench if you can.
“Sometimes, if players aren’t quite ready, you can’t just start players if they aren’t ready to start, regardless of the importance of the game and the situation. They are the decisions we’ll make. Other than that, we’ll be more or less similar in terms of the squad.
“There’s different types of risks. Some injuries you can take a risk with, get through the game and not worry much about the after effects. Some injuries are less about taking the risk and whether the player is able to do what you need them to do.
“There’s no point a player coming onto the pitch and limping around for 10-15 minutes and going off at the end of the game. We can’t afford that with any player.
“Every injury is slightly different and you just have to make good decisions. You can’t just throw a player out there and put them in danger of making a minor injury a really serious one.
“All those conversations are a little more urgent towards the end of the season when you talk about the importance of the season. It doesn’t really change how you view it, ultimately.”
