We head to St. Mary’s Stadium for a meeting with Southampton on Tuesday
Martí Cifuentes provided an update on the fitness of his squad prior to travelling
Luke Thomas won’t be involved after collecting a fifth yellow card against Stoke
Caleb Okoli suffered an injury at Norwich and may also be ruled out of contention
Full-back Thomas picked up a fifth yellow card of the season during the 2-1 victory over Stoke City on Saturday, ruling him out of being involved at St. Mary’s in midweek, as we travel to the South Coast for an 8pm GMT kick-off.
Discussing his potential replacement against the Saints, City’s Manager says there are several different possibilities, including a defensive reshuffle, though that may also depend on the fitness of Okoli.
The centre-back was forced off in the win at Norwich City prior to the international break and missed the weekend win over the Potters.
“We’re going to need to analyse it,” Cifuentes explained. “Obviously, we knew that this could happen, so we have been thinking about a couple of options.
“We need to see a little bit and now speak to the medical department to see how everyone is feeling and how the guys who played today (Saturday) will recover.
“Wout [Faes] has played there (at left-back) before but we don’t have many other options at centre half. We have Bade [Aluko] as well. If we choose him, it’s because we think he is more than ready.
“That’s the reason why they are here and why they train, not just to pretend that it’s nice to have the Academy players around. Silko [Thomas] again got minutes (against Stoke) and all the young guys who are here, we think that they can help us.
“Or we could change formation. There are different ways and we are going to see how we can solve it. I think we’re waiting for some results for him (Okoli) which will come on Monday and then I will know more.”
