City's youngsters, already unable to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition heading into the final group stage fixture, put up a brave fight against the Pilgrims, but ultimately left Lincolnshire empty handed.

The National League Cup gives our U21s side the opportunity to play senior opposition. Thirty-seven minutes into the encounter, Gavan Holohan won possession high up the pitch, allowing Lennon Wheeldon to finish past Freddie Marson and score the only goal of the game at Jakemans Community Stadium.

Securing United's first National League Cup win, Paul Hurst's side move up to seventh as a result, overtaking the young Foxes, who finish eighth in the Group D table, on two points from four matches.

There's little time to dwell on the Boston reverse, however, with the side coached by Leon McSweeney on the road again for Premier League 2 action this Friday, facing Nottingham Forest at Loughborough University Stadium (7pm GMT kick-off).

The details

City: Marson; Akolbire (Sutherington 60'), Toko (c) (Gray 46'), Diallo, Daniels (Govan 68'); Aideed, Donnelly; Hutchinson (Quinn 60'), Corden, Anugo; King (Fletcher 68').
