The Lionesses visit to Filbert Way, in which they faced Greece in a World Cup qualifying match, was a successful one, as they ran out 5-0 winners on the night.
Alessia Russo opened the scoring early after being slotted through expertly by Lauren James, before the Chelsea winger turned goalscorer, firing past the Greek 'keeper on 16 minutes. Georgia Stanway and a second from James rounded off the scoring in the first half. Russo's strike on 75 minutes settled the scoreline as England won 8-1 over across legs.

There was a familiar buzz around LE2 as Sarina Wiegman’s European champions arrived in Leicester for the third time in three years.
A crowd over 22,000 packed in to watch some of England’s biggest names, with the occasion offering another reminder of the special atmosphere that international football can bring to the home of Leicester City.
While the Lionesses have made themselves at home in recent years, England’s relationship with Leicester stretches back much further.
Before the move to King Power Stadium in 2002, Filbert Street had played host to a number of England youth internationals. The relocation to our current home, however, opened the door to the senior men’s team – and it did not take long for the Three Lions to make their mark.

In 2003, Serbia & Montenegro became our first senior international visitors. Steven Gerrard and Joe Cole got on the scoresheet in a 2-1 England victory, while former Foxes striker Emile Heskey, by then at Liverpool, briefly wore the captain’s armband in the second half. The Three Lions were managed that evening by future Leicester City Manager Sven-Göran Eriksson, who sadly passed away in 2024.
Fifteen years later, England’s men returned to Leicester for another international fixture, this time against Switzerland in September 2018, months after reaching the FIFA World Cup Semi-Finals. There was a strong Leicester City connection in Sir Gareth Southgate’s squad too, with Harry Maguire starting and Ben Chilwell coming on from the bench as Marcus Rashford’s goal secured a 1-0 win.
Since then, it has been the Lionesses who have carried the international torch at King Power Stadium – and they have certainly given supporters plenty to remember. Their first visit came in October 2023, as England edged Belgium 1-0 in the UEFA Women’s Nations League. Lauren Hemp scored the decisive goal, ensuring the Lionesses’ first appearance at our ground was a winning one.
There were over 22,000 fans at King Power Stadium on Tuesday evening.
They returned in June 2025 for England’s final fixture before their triumphant UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 campaign. Jamaica were the visitors, but the Reggae Girlz were unable to halt a rampant England side, who ran out 7-0 winners. Ella Toone struck twice, while Lucy Bronze, Stanway, Russo, Aggie Beever-Jones and Beth Mead also found the net.
Tuesday night brought another chapter in that story, with the Lionesses once again making Filbert Way their stage as they continued their journey towards the next Women’s World Cup, set to be staged in Brazil next summer.
