It’s a battle which could be key in the league standings, with Leicester taking on second-bottom Liverpool at St. Helens Stadium this Sunday (11:55am GMT kick-off), with just one point separating the two sides.
Ahead of the game, the Manager spoke to the media and analysed the four-week break from fixtures, and how his team are setting up for the final seven games of the season…
‘We need everyone to be galvanised together’
Creating a positive environment.
A crucial game to come back to after an international break, the Manager admitted his team didn’t have much time off, keeping the focus on the job in hand.
Explaining what has gone into each day over the past few weeks, he was delighted to see a positive impact from his side in training ahead of the trip to Merseyside.
“You don’t really get much of a break,” Passmoor admitted. “You make sure you’re up to date with things, and we’ve utilised this opportunity to work with the players that were still here.
“We’ve had some good sessions now that everyone is back together; they’ve been together and empowered as a group. We’ve worked on our units and are now looking ahead to our preparation for the month of March.
“We’ve had a look at opposition analysis as well so it’s been a busy few weeks. When you’ve got momentum, you don’t want the break.
“So, at Christmas, we had momentum to our game, and the break interrupted that, but when you look ahead of this international camp, we didn’t get the results we wanted to, therefore it’s an opportunity to reset and look at our values.
“It’s been good to have input from everyone over the break because we need everyone to be galvanised together, starting with a tough game against Liverpool this weekend.”
‘Looking to put in good performances’
Targeting a positive end to the season.
Quickly approaching the end of the season, the Manager didn’t entertain the idea of an additional play-off fixture, stating that the focus is on the controllables in front of us.
“We’re not aiming to come out on top in the play-off,” Passmoor stated. "We don’t want to be in that game, and we know once we worked in, there was a requirement needed to lift the culture and values in this team.
“We need to ensure that every mind, whether staff or players, is focused on these next 10 weeks, seven games, and we’re looking to put in good performances to get results.
“It’s a simple project structure for us right now. It’s about staying in WSL1, then build from there and be a consistent mid-table team in the seasons to come.
“The narrative was that no one expected us to be on nine points and now we’ve got a chance to get more points on the board and we’re looking forward to doing that.”
‘Opportunity for players to step up’
The Manager confirmed injuries to returning internationals.
During the press conference, Passmoor opened up about several players, such as Sari Kees, Olivia Clark and Chantelle Swaby, returning to Belvoir Drive with injuries and small knocks. Going on to say how this is a part of football, and a part of the challenge of being Manager, he looked at the silver lining, and the opportunity it offers to others in the squad to step up.
“It gives opportunities to others,” the Manager continued. “We’re not the only ones in the WSL to struggle with this (injuries), because of workload and number of games, both when it’s busy and quiet.
“We’re in the toughest and most competitive league so you’ve got to ensure you have a competitive squad because injuries and suspensions will happen, and you have to be able to adapt.
“We’ve got an opportunity once more for players to step forward and step in this weekend.”
