Luke Thomas looks ahead to our third consecutive away trip, vs. Charlton Athletic
The Sky Bet Championship fixture is a 12:30pm kick-off at The Valley
The defender gave his assessment of the defeat to Preston North End
He is aiming to bounce back at the first opportunity
Firstly reflecting on a late defeat to Preston North End, our first reverse of the new Sky Bet Championship campaign, the defender felt we were not up to standard in both boxes, which led to the disappointing outcome at Deepdale.
But with another away match at The Valley on the horizon this weekend, there’s an opportunity for redemption in the capital, and bouncing back is paramount, as Thomas explained, speaking earlier in the week.
“It was a tough day,” the Academy graduate admitted following the late loss in Lancashire. “We probably didn’t create enough as a team and we didn’t defend the counter-attack well enough, really.
“When they were winning the ball back, they were spinning it in behind and we were finding it difficult to deal with that. We knew that was coming before the game, we just didn’t adapt too well to it during the game. Equally, we got punished.
“It’s a game not to look back on too much. It’s a long season; we’ve got 46 games and we’ve only played two far. We’ll move on and hopefully we can get a result at the weekend.
“It’s something that we’ve spoken about. You are going to lose games, but when you do, the best teams are the ones who react to that and go back out the next week and pick up a result.
“They (Charlton) have picked up a couple of good results themselves. It’s a tough game; every game in the Championship is difficult. We know that and it’s about preparing right and being ready to bring our qualities on the day.
“Hopefully we will be and can get three points on the day. As long as we stay together as players and fans and stick together as a club, I’m sure we’ll get the right results come the end of the season and hopefully we can push for promotion.”
Manager Martí Cifuentes continues to get his messages across to the group, working hard in Seagrave to improve the knowledge and application of tactical ideas as we adjust to a season in the second tier and the different challenges to face.
The 24-year-old commented: “Throughout training over the last few weeks, you can see us getting a lot better as players and as a team, so hopefully we can show that over the next few games and we’ll get results.
“He’s shown us as much as he can in terms of his style and how he wants to play and we’ve been working on that in training and pre-season. I’m sure you can see we’re playing a lot more of an attacking style of football.
“That’s relative with getting relegated from the Premier League and coming into the Championship, where we’re expected to dominate games, be on top and be on the front foot – that’s going to be a key part.
“We’re going to be playing teams that are quite direct and if we can keep the ball in their half as much as possible, we’ll put them under pressure and score some goals.
“We’ve got a lot higher expectations this year and people are going to look at us as a real threat throughout the season and be right up there by the end.”
