City had to battle from behind against Sheffield Wednesday at King Power Stadium, with defensive duo Jannik Vestergaard and then Wout Faes – in the 87th minute – turning the match on its head and giving Martí Cifuentes a winning start as Manager.
It was a tough opening day fixture for the Foxes, who prevailed after remaining patient on Filbert Way, ultimately getting their reward at the full-time whistle.
We next go to Accu Stadium on Wednesday in the first round of the Carabao Cup, taking on Sky Bet League 1 outfit Huddersfield in a 7:45pm BST kick-off.
“Obviously, the first game of the season’s always a tough one, but we’re glad to come out with the three points and we’ll move onto Wednesday,” Thomas said.
“After they got the first goal, we knew they were going to sit back and try and defend their lead. It’s always hard to break down a block at the back.
“In the second half, we changed the shape a little bit and it worked. [Cifuentes] said to stay calm and that the chances will come – and they did, and we took them.
“The set-piece coach is going to be really happy throughout the week! It’s key to work on those things. We did in training this week and it’s paid off.
“There’s going to be things to improve. It’s a good start obviously, getting three points on the board, but we can only get better from here.”
Backed by the Foxes faithful in LE2, Thomas was proud of the way the players gave the fans a reward for their backing, and is excited for what’s to come this month, now we’re back into the swing of competitive matches.
“The fans were amazing throughout the game,” the Academy graduate added. “Even when we were behind, they were keeping their support towards us and they got their reward.
“This is what it’s about, getting into the season. Obviously the Championship’s a tough league. We’re going to be playing a lot of games throughout the year, so it’s about staying as fit as you can and recovering well and going again.
“The games will come thick and fast, so it’s about taking those three points and moving onto the next game on Wednesday.”
