It’s a game which puts fifth up against 19th with European qualification and top-flight survival at stake for each side respectively over the coming weeks and months.
Perhaps surprisingly, none of our 12 PL away games against Manchester City have been drawn – we’ve won five to the Citizens' seven. Since the hosts moved to Etihad Stadium, originally called the City of Manchester Stadium, there’s been 43 goals shared between the sides in the top flight (25 for Man City and 18 for the Foxes).
Ahead of the trip north, here’s our rundown of some of the numbers behind the clash…
Recent encounters – Seeking a turnaround
Man City have had the upper hand in recent league meetings, winning each of the last five. The most recent clash saw the Foxes fall 2-0 at home in December 2024, with Savinho and Erling Haaland finding the net, despite Leicester performing admirably on Filbert Way.
The two sides have also met in cup encounters over the years. Leicester fans will fondly recall our 2021 Community Shield triumph at Wembley, with Kelechi Iheanacho’s late penalty securing a 1-0 victory. In the Carabao Cup, we have been involved in penalty shootout heartbreak against the Manchester side – most notably in December 2018, when Marc Albrighton’s goal forced a 1-1 draw before Man City won 3-1 on spot-kicks.
Hat-trick heroes & spot-kick specialists
Jamie Vardy remains the last Leicester player to net a hat-trick in this fixture, stunning the hosts in the Foxes’ famous 5-2 win in September 2020. Meanwhile, the last Manchester City player to hit the net a trio of times was Sergio Agüero, who fired in four goals in a 5-1 win at Etihad Stadium in 2018.
On the penalty front, Leicester’s last successful spot-kick in this fixture came via Iheanacho in the 2021 Community Shield. Meanwhile, Haaland converted from 12 yards in April 2023. One memorable Foxes effort against Man City came in the FA Cup in January 2011 when the late Sol Bamba scored with his first touch at the Club after just 45 seconds, which remains a Club record. Although that tie in LE2 ended in a 2-2 draw, the Citizens came out on top in a replay and eventually lifted the iconic cup later that campaign.
Familiar faces & club connections
There have been plenty of links between the two clubs over the years. Recent Leicester forward Iheanacho came through Man City’s set-up before joining the Foxes in 2017. Riyad Mahrez, one of Leicester’s title-winning stars from 2015/16, made a high-profile move to Manchester in 2018, reportedly for a then-Club record fee. Other notable names to represent both sides include Kasper Schmeichel, Paul Dickov, and Don Revie.
Ernie Hine and Vardy share the title of Leicester City's leading scorers against the Citizens, each netting nine times. Meanwhile, Billy Meredith, Alex Herd, and Billy McAdams top the charts for Man City with seven goals against the Foxes. Notably, Mahrez has found the net for both clubs in this fixture.
