Leicester City beat Fiorentina 2-0 in a pre-season friendly on Sunday afternoon
Goals from Jordan Ayew and Abdul Fatawu saw the Foxes win on home soil
Manager Martí Cifuentes gave his insights into our final runout of the summer
He was ‘happy’ with what he saw from his side but sees room for improvement
Jordan Ayew and Abdul Fatawu notched first-half goals in the pre-season success on Filbert Way, seeing off the Serie A outfit with a high pressing game which became key to creating the first of those strikes.
With the foundations of his tactical ideas laid in Austria last month, Cifuentes is looking to embed his message further during this final week of preparations, seeing signs of encouragement aplenty across the 90 minutes on Filbert Way.
“I’m proud and I feel happy about the performance,” the Spaniard assessed. “It was quite a complete performance according to how many weeks we have started to worked with the group.
“There are lots of positives to build on and take for the next weeks. Obviously, there are still things to improve and definitely we want to improve. But in the overall, I’m happy because I saw a team with a certain identity and a clear way of playing and I’m so happy for that.
“The application of the guys has been excellent. Credit to them because it’s always easy when you have got very good players. They are picking up ideas pretty quick. There will always be certain things that we want to improve.
“But the main idea about trying to be a team who wants to have the ball, not only to keep it but to attack and be a brave team who wants to press high and create chances – I think it was there.”
Bringing to a close a fruitful summer schedule which has seen the Foxes take big strides towards the opening Sky Bet Championship fixture of the season against Sheffield Wednesday back on Filbert Way next weekend, Cifuentes is not getting carried away when it comes to the positive pre-season results, knowing all too well the rigours of this league.
“In this process, there will be ups and downs,” he admitted. “For today, we are happy, but you know how the Championship is, it’s a difficult league and it’s not going to be perfect. But as long as I see this commitment and desire to be the team that we want to be and, in this style, then I’m going to be happy.
“The idea for us was to have a good pre-season and then to focus on Sheffield Wednesday. We know them from the last two seasons when I met them several times, but obviously we don’t know exactly what to expect. We have full respects for all the clubs, especially a club with the history of Sheffield Wednesday. Let’s see what we’re going to face next Sunday. We’ll always be ourselves and the way that we want to play.”
A first glimpse of Cifuentes’ Foxes for the majority of Foxes fans in attendance, City’s Manager saved his last word for the Blue Army after making his King Power Stadium bow, keen to come together as one over the course of the season to come.
The 43-year-old added: “I’m so happy to be here and feel this as my home, I felt very good. With the players, we were talking before the game that we need to make sure that this is a fortress and I’m sure that together with our fans, hopefully we can build a very successful season. I’m looking forward to it and there is appreciation from my side for the support.”
