Leicester City beat Ipswich Town 3-1 at King Power Stadium on Saturday
Bobby De Cordova-Reid, Abdul Fatawu and Jordan Ayew were on the scoresheet
Manager Martí Cifuentes provided his take on an impressive home victory
It was a good end to a ‘difficult week’, he said, picking up seven points from nine
Bobby De Cordova-Reid set us up for victory with an early stunner on Filbert Way, followed by an extraordinary goal from Abdul Fatawu, scoring from inside his own half ahead of the break.
Jordan Ayew’s finish, early on in the second period, made it three, before Jens Cajuste gave the Tractor Boys hope of an unlikely late comeback that didn’t materialise, with a resolute defensive display ensuring that the points stayed in Leicester.
That’s now seven points from the last three matches, putting to bed the frustrations of losing a two-goal lead at Bristol City in midweek to climb up to eighth in the Sky Bet Championship table.
“[It was] very good,” the Spaniard began, speaking post-match. “It’s a huge win for us and definitely not only the result, but I would say the performance. We played really well during the first half to take the lead.
“We kept saying to the guys to keep pushing and today we definitely did. We wanted the fans to go back home happy and I think that we managed to achieve it. We wanted to make sure that we had a good week in terms of the reaction, especially after the disappointment of Bristol.
“I think the guys responded really well. It’s just disappointing that we couldn’t keep the clean sheet. The goal is something that we could avoid, 100 per cent. But I don’t want to focus so much on this. I think that we did a lot of good things, we created chances, scored really nice goals. Credit to the guys, all of them played at a high level.
“Obviously, Ipswich are a really good team, but I’m really pleased with the work ethic of the team, working really hard. All the players stepped up in a difficult week and everybody responded in a really high level.”
Fatawu’s sensational 60-yard hit was the story of the day, stealing the headlines with his audacious hit doubling our lead and Cifuentes was pleased, not only with his goalscoring touch, but also the defensive work from the Ghana international.
“It’s a fantastic goal from a very good player and a very important player for us,” the 43-year-old enthused. “We’re very happy for him, the fact that Abdul showed his quality, not only with the goal, but how much attacking output he is giving us and how much he is helping the team working defensively as well out of possession.
“It shows that he is completely committed. He knows that he has something with the team as well that he has to work with, and then I’m sure that he is going to get the reward.”
