Two Joao Pedro penalties twice had the Seagulls in front but Stephy Mavididi levelled the scores with a fine finish and Caleb Okoli’s first-ever goal for the Club, during his first start in two months, saw us claim a share of the spoils on the South Coast, ending a run of eight-straight defeats. Just like in the reverse fixture, Leicester showed powers of recovery to earn a point which takes our tally to 18 points, now 14 adrift of Wolverhampton Wanderers in 17th, ahead of facing Liverpool back at King Power Stadium on Easter Sunday (4:30pm BST kick-off).
A tale of two penalties
It looked to be a familiar story when, after good play from Carlos Baleba, Conor Coady blocked Simon Adringra’s goalbound shot with his arm, leading to a VAR check that resulted in a penalty. Pedro converted, sending Mads Hermansen the wrong way.
That advantage wouldn’t last long, however, taking just eight minutes for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Foxes to respond. Mavididi, leading the charge, initially looked to pick out Jamie Vardy in the middle but once his cross was blocked, opted to strike low and hard, beating Marc Verbruggen and getting Leicester level on his first start in 10 games.
The second half was barely five minutes old when Luke Thomas was penalised on another VAR check for pulling Matt O’Riley’s shirt. Pedro stepped up again from 12 yards and made no mistake once more.
Leicester’s late charge
The introduction of Oliver Skipp, Patson Daka and Ricardo Pereira injected new life into the Foxes’ attack and it wasn’t long before goalscorer Mavididi picked out Daka, who saw his attempt saved, shortly before McAteer sent a curling effort just wide of the post.
It wasn’t to be in vain as Okoli popped up from Bilal El Khannouss’ free-kick to send his header into the back of the net; City reaping the rewards for an improved second-half display.
A late flourish could have even brought a winner, with Daka forcing another save, before El Khannouss struck the upright – the Zambian first on the scene but unsuccessful in turning the rebound home. Mavididi wasn’t far away from his second either, only a Baleba deflection preventing more work for Verbruggen.
And yet it still could have been Fabian Hürzeler’s side who grabbed a late winner, but for Hermansen denying Danny Welbeck, an outcome which would have been extremely harsh on the Foxes.
Another debutant
Following Jeremy Monga’s debut against Newcastle United, young forward Jake Evans, who can play across the front line, became the latest Academy player to be given a chance, emerging from the bench in stoppage-time, replacing Kasey McAteer.
The 16-year-old, who has been with the Club since Under-9s, has impressed with the Development Squad this term and looks to have a bright future ahead of him. There was also a place among the substitutes for 18-year-old full-back Olabade Aluko – the first time both have been involved in a First Team squad.
