First goals for the Club for both Will Alves and Harry Howell, coming back-to-back at the end of the first half as the Foxes turned the screw, ultimately secured a maiden win under Russell Martin.

It lifts us up to 10th in the standings at this early stage of the season, with attention now turning to Saturday’s visit of Oxford United to Filbert Way, a 3pm BST kick-off.

Opportunities at each end

An early Foxes change saw veteran goalkeeper Alex McCarthy called upon inside the opening minutes, replacing the injured Jakub Stolarczyk, who was carried off on a stretcher after a collision with Ronan Curtis.

That initially dented any Foxes rhythm and we had to survive Will Evans flashing the ball across the face of goal, though Bradley Ibrahim couldn’t make a connection with an attempted diving header.

For Leicester, meanwhile, Bobby De Cordova-Reid went close to opening the scoring, latching on to a through ball from Louis Page, before Admir Bristric was just unable to apply a finishing touch himself as City grew into the game.

Alves, back in the starting XI, then cut the ball back to De Cordova-Reid, who took a touch before striking wide of the post. Half-chances kept on coming for Martin’s men, with the industrious Bristric firing off target, on the turn, before captain Harry Souttar’s header was claimed by Murphy Cooper.

A quick-fire double

It took until first-half stoppage-time for the deadlock to be broken, but only after Ibrahim dragged a shot into the side netting at the other end, with the travelling Argyle fans briefly believing their side had found a way through.

Soon, though, it would be the Blue Army up off their feet. Louis Page slipped in Alves and after cutting inside, his low shot took a deflection off Alexander Mitchell, wrong-footing Cooper, who watched it loop into the net off the underside of the bar.

Less than two minutes later, it was 2-0. As City sensed momentum was building, Sammy Braybrooke tried his luck and the shot could only be parried into the path of Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Howell, who finished first-time from close range.

Seeing out victory

Three days on from our last league outing, a double change provided fresh energy in the second period, with experienced pair Liam Cullen and Wes Burns on in place of Bristric and Howell, before Tommy Watson was also introduced for Jayden Joseph.

But it was the visitors on the attack in the closing stages, desperate to find a route back into the contest. There was brief hope for Tom Cleverley’s men when substitute Caleb Watts struck the post from range, before City were indebted to McCarthy for two superb saves late on.

The 39-year-old denied Watts again, and then, three minutes into stoppage-time, Evans too, clawing the ball away when his header looked certain to hit the back of the net. From there, the points were secured.
