Louis Page’s first competitive goal for Leicester City broke the deadlock, before Scott Pollock drew the hosts level, direct from a corner. Emil Riis and Kamari Doyle helped us retake the lead early in the second half, though Josh Ashby kept the tie alive until Tommy Watson struck late on.
The draw for the second round will take place on Monday evening, with City ball number 34, while we’re next in action on Tuesday, hosting Walsall in the Jersey Mike’s Trophy. Tickets for the 7pm kick-off at King Power Stadium are on sale. Going ahead
It was a strong side named by Russell Martin, who made just three changes from the XI which played in our last league encounter.
With 64 places between the two sides in the football pyramid, Oxford City, going well in the National League North, were eyeing an upset, dreaming that the magic of the FA Cup remained alive.
Getting to grips with the tight, artificial pitch, surrounded by almost 3,500 fans packed into the MGroup Stadium, it took 17 minutes for our opener. Page took aim from 25 yards out, striking sweetly into the roof of the net via a slight deflection off Ludwig Francillette. In truth, though, it was heading for goal with or without that touch.
Hoops defender Francillette looked to make amends with a close-range header that Franco Ravizzoli was equal to. And in what was becoming an end-to-end encounter, half chances fell the way of eventual goalscorers Riis and Doyle, with Leicester keen to increase the advantage and avoid a potential first round upset.
The hosts hit back
Just over half an hour in, though, Ross Jenkins’ men equalised. Pollock, a boyhood Leicester fan, found the net directly from a corner which swirled into the far corner after Ravizzoli was put under pressure in the six-yard box.
A half-time reshuffle saw Harry Howell come on for Caleb Okoli and, as we adjusted to the change, Francillette hit one from range which failed to trouble Ravizzoli.
Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Howell would soon be involved in our second goal, providing a dinked cross which was headed home by Riis in the middle; the in-form striker scoring his eighth of the season.
Two soon turned into three for the Foxes. Doyle was the man on target with a clever finish, finding the net with the outside of his left boot.
Twists and turns
Just when you thought Leicester might be out of sight, the hosts hit back. Oxford captain Ashby raced through on goal, chipping the ball over Ravizzoli. Game on again.
Doyle might have increased his tally soon after but was off balance as he collected Sammy Braybrooke’s pass and opted to shoot, allowing Jonny Maxted to claim, before he headed over from Howell’s cross.
Howell, though, fancied a goal of his own and cut inside onto his left before letting fly, with Maxted required to make a diving save and prevent it finding the top corner.
Another Brighton loanee and substitute would make the game safe. Watson poked home from the left-hand side of the box to ensure Leicester’s name is in the hat for the second round.
There was still time for Watson and Howell to come close to increasing the margin of victory in the closing stages, and Olabade Aluko, who hit the bar, but four goals would be enough in Oxford.
