Luke Thomas previews Tuesday’s visit to Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship
Kim Hellberg’s Boro are currently second in the table
Leicester City, in the bottom three, need to build on the performance at Stoke City, Luke Thomas says
We ended a five-game losing streak with a 2-2 draw in Staffordshire
Although denied three points at bet635 Stadium, goals from Divine Mukasa and Harry Winks put us in front, before Ben Wilmot’s second goal of the afternoon saw it end in a draw.
Thomas was one of several Foxes players to have late chances to seal all the points, hitting the post at the end of added time, but he was enthused by the display nonetheless.
Recovering from a slow start in Staffordshire, we were on top for much of the second half in Gary Rowett’s first game in charge, with a draw ending a run of five consecutive defeats in all competitions.
“We’re ready for the game, it’s just about us performing on the day,” Academy graduate Thomas said, looking ahead to the next assignment at Boro. “Obviously, throughout the season, we’ve not really shown that.
“But, with the positive performance [at Stoke], hopefully we can take that into Tuesday and get the three points. The [1-1 draw with Boro in November] was definitely a frustrating one.
“They scored in the last minute of the game. They’re doing really well. We need to perform and show what we’re capable of.”
Set to be backed once again by the Blue Army in the North East, Thomas says they can help the side get over the line as we look to climb out of the bottom three and away from danger over the coming weeks.
“It’s key for the rest of the season,” he added. “They were outstanding [at Stoke]. They were with us throughout the 90 minutes, even when they scored the equaliser, so it probably helped us push on towards the end of the game and get the opportunities that we wanted.”
Reflecting on that 2-2 draw at Stoke, he said: “It feels like it’s just against us at the minute.
“We’ve hit the post and the bar towards the end, but on a positive, I felt like, when it goes 2-2, in other games throughout this season, we’ve maybe sat back, but we’ve really gone for it.
“We got the opportunities, so it’s about putting them away, and hopefully we can do that throughout the rest of the season.
“Straight from kick-off at 2-2, we went straight forward. Stephy’s 1-v-1 with the defender, which is really positive, and we’ve finished the game in their box basically. We just couldn’t get it over the line in the end.
“We shown that real togetherness. Especially in the second half, we got the ball down and played. We dominated the majority of that second half. It was a really strong second-half performance.
“We got ourselves back in the game and Winksy put us ahead. It’s a frustrating one to not come home with three points, but we’ll go again on Tuesday and hopefully we’ll get the three points.”
