Substitute Ibane Bowat’s goal, on 63 minutes, proved to be the difference between the sides, with Pompey now seven points clear of the bottom three. The Foxes remain 23rd, five points from safety prior to West Bromwich Albion kicking off later in the day.
We’re back in action on Tuesday night, facing Hull City at King Power Stadium, before another home fixture, against Millwall, three days later – our penultimate match of the season, with a trip to Blackburn Rovers to come on the final day.
Cagey opening exchanges
Patson Daka
The first big talking point came just 10 minutes in when, after good work down the right, Abdul Fatawu delivered a low cross in the box, where Patson Daka nipped in front of Conor Shaughnessy, going down under the challenge from the Portsmouth centre-back, but referee Gavin Ward was unmoved.
While perhaps fortunate to escape conceding a penalty, John Mousinho’s side were hampered by two early injuries, forcing both Keshi Anderson and Tery Devlin off the pitch in the opening quarter-of-an-hour, though it would be one of their replacements who made a vital contribution.
It took a while, therefore, for any rhythm to develop, given the stop-start nature of proceedings, with Conor Chaplin’s shot, dragged well wide of goal, the first effort either side had managed after a fruitless opening 20 minutes.
Regan Poole repeated the feat after making his way up from the back, while substitute Adrian Segecic then got the wrong side of Luke Thomas and it needed Jamaal Lascelles to block his goal-bound effort.
At the other end it was Andre Dozzell getting in the way of Fatawu’s curling strike from the right. Bobby De Cordova-Reid also volleyed over the top from a Fatawu corner, prior to his left-footed shot being held by Nicolas Schmid in the Pompey goal.
Trading blows
Asmir Begovic
The hosts came out of the traps quickly in the second half, with Chaplin forcing Asmir Begovic into a diving near-post save.
The Foxes were keen to land the first blow, too. Hamza Choudhury planted one into the side netting, right in front of the sold out away end housing 2,187 of the travelling Blue Army, some of whom were up in celebration prematurely, such was their angle of the shot.
Millenic Alli then found himself free in the box, opting to try and take the ball around Begovic rather than shoot and the Bosnian did well to allow it to run out of play. Segecic was unable to find the target as well, off balance when he attempted to find the net.
The crucial moment
Leicester City
A goal was coming and it fell the way of Portsmouth. In a sea of bodies at the back post, Bowat managed to get to the ball and turn home Segecic’s corner to put the home side in a commanding position.
Gary Rowett brought on Jordan James, Divine Mukasa and later Jordan Ayew, in an attempt to fashion more opportunities, but it was two of those in the starting XI who almost combined for an equaliser.
Harry Winks’ cross was met by a glancing Daka header, which required a smart stop from Schmid. In the midst of a Leicester siege, Mukasa’s shot was blocked before Regan Poole slid in to prevent Jannik Vestergaard’s strike from reaching its destination. A late Mukasa free-kick couldn't test Schmid and their clean sheet would remain intact.
