Stevenage emerged as 2-1 victors in Tuesday’s Jersey Mike’s Trophy fixture
Emil Riis scored as the Foxes were narrowly beaten at SPORTA Arena
Manager Russell Martin assessed the key moments which cost his side
Our second group stage fixture in the Jersey Mike’s Trophy ended in defeat at SPORTA Arena, with goals from Wanya Marçal and Oliver Sanderson enough for the hosts to claim all three points. Despite substitute Emil Riis pulling one back for the Foxes with a clinical finish later in the second half, a host of chances went begging and our failure to punish Alex Revell’s side cost us, Martin believes.
The result leaves us second in Southern Group B with one game left to play, while attention turns back to Sky Bet League One with Peterborough United due at King Power Stadium this Saturday (3pm BST kick-off). “I think they had a really strong side out tonight in terms of the team that usually plays in the league,” the 40-year-old assessed. “We made nine changes from the last [league] game.
“Our team will look different on Saturday and I think you could see a difference when Bobby [De Cordova-Reid], Will [Alves] and Emil came on the pitch. They impacted it a lot.
We’ve got a couple of guys that have come back from international duty, so it could have looked really disjointed and a bit messy, but actually, I think the performance was really good from the guys.
“We hurt them a lot tonight with passes over the top. We mixed the game up really well, I thought. We went in behind a lot, then we just started playing into the pockets when they dropped off, because we were a threat in behind.
“But we get beat in both boxes. We have to be more clinical, so it's the same message. And then we only have to defend a couple of moments, really. They don't get in our box very much at all.

“The set play is really frustrating and the goal we concede is really frustrating. We’re in their box a lot, we create a lot, miss some big, big chances and it feels like we're so close to being the team we want to be.
“I think we're so close to that. If we convert a couple of those tonight, we have a really good scoreline and everyone's really happy.
“We don't make the most of the moments, so both boxes have let us down and when we really commit in those areas, we'll be brilliant.
“It’s frustrating again, but also so many positives, with minutes on the pitch for a lot of guys that needed them because they haven't had many recently and played really well. We'll be better for tonight, for sure.”
Full debuts for youngsters Tommy Neale and Riley Carr were two positives from the evening, with both showing their potential after impressing across pre-season and for our Under-21s.
Martin added: “Tommy Neale making his debut was fantastic, Riley Carr the same, two guys who have deserved it. I’m really pleased with them.
“Riley a bit later on as he is from non-league as well, but [they are] two guys who have come from the Academy. They’ve just really worked really hard. Tommy's a fantastic footballer, a really good footballer and a brilliant kid.
“He wants to learn, trains really hard every day and has played really well for the Under-21s. We're at every home game and we’ve watched a lot of him. He's been training for a long time with us, as well.
“Same as Riley, who came over as an extra body in pre-season training at the start and really impressed us with his work ethic and his willingness to run. He has really brilliant speed to run in beyond.”
