With pre-season games coming thick and fast, Tuesday night’s trip to Bristol Rovers arrives just three days after our first workout against Northampton Town in Seagrave, a 3-0 victory setting us up nicely for the week to come, which also includes meeting Burton Albion this weekend, as the calendar continues to take shape. ‘Maintain what's been set’
Speaking prior to the heading to Memorial Stadium for a 7pm BST kick-off, City’s Manager spoke about the standards in training starting to pay off in the pre-season matches, which must reflect what he hopes to see when the competitive action comes into focus.
“We need it to maintain what they’ve set so far,” the 40-year-old explained. “The level of the work they’ve done in terms of the intensity they’ve approached things at and the willingness to learn and work and be coached, they’ve been fantastic.
“We have to keep building energy and building momentum with that and what we’re going to do and what we’re going to be about. Tuesday gives us another chance to do that.”
‘The Academy has done a brilliant job’
A host of Academy graduates made appearances in the Northampton fixture, which saw Will Alves score twice after Stephy Mavididi’s first-half opener and Martin remains excited by the prospect of continuing to nurture young talents who have progressed through the Foxes’ ranks in recent years.
“Part of the attraction and excitement for me to come here, amongst many other things, was the amount of young talent that the Football Club has,” he added. “The Academy has done a brilliant job over many years of producing young players.
“One of them has gone, Jeremy [Monga], for a lot of money which helps us be able to move forward and get back to where we want to be. We wish Jeremy all the best but the guys on show today (Saturday) were fantastic.
“Some really exciting young men but also some good people. It’s about instilling behaviours and habits into them that mean they can play for us this season.
“If you are a young player now here, with the situation the Club has found itself in, there’s such an opportunity. They should be so excited and some of them really took that today and they have to continue that.”
