LCFC Women defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 3-2 in the Barclays Women’s Super League
Shannon O’Brien scored the opening goal at King Power Stadium on Sunday
The forward shared her thoughts on the success following full-time
A third straight home win to move the Foxes six points clear of the relegation zone
The forward broke the deadlock just 12 minutes into the contest, firing home a low strike from the edge of the box prior to Saori Takarada and Shana Chossenotte both adding their names to the scoresheet before the break, in what was a sensational half of football from the Foxes. “I actually just watched it back and in your head it just doesn’t look the way you thought,” O’Brien revealed on her King Power Stadium opener. “It was actually alright! It just bounced to me on the edge of the box.
“I think sometimes I try to overcomplicate things and maybe look for another pass, but I just thought I will have a go and hit it and luckily it went in. We had started high and aggressive, that was the gameplan from Amandine [Miquel] and Amaury [Messuwe] and that’s what we did.
“It was a crazy start and that set the tone a bit. I think we then realised how much space we had in the transition and in behind. We just utilised that and used the speed that we have on the wings and up front. We executed the game plan and we knew what we had to get in behind and we used it.”
A Madison Haley goal with a quarter of an hour to play reignited Brighton and once Yuka Momiki missed her penalty, the Seagulls sensed a potential route back into the game.
That was quickly followed by Fran Kirby converting a spot-kick of her own and ensured there was still work for us to do in the closing stages. But, backed by the Blue Army, it was a task that City stood up to.
The 23-year-old continued: “It was so nervy! I think we made a bit more difficult than it needed to be, but we stood strong and it’s a big moment when we concede a penalty. Some teams could crumble under that pressure and we didn’t. As much as it was nervy, I’m proud of everyone for holding on at the end.
“Hannah [Cain] said on the bench, it’s like the FA Cup game we played at Tottenham (last season). It was really loud and the fans really pushed us through. I don’t think I’ve heard us that loud in my life. That really got us over the line and we’re really grateful for that.”
Tottenham Hotspur are the next visitors on Filbert Way this Sunday and with the momentum gained from three straight home victories, O’Brien cannot wait to get back out there in front of the home support. She added: “We take each game as it comes, but winning, and winning games like that, is going to fill us with confidence. Everyone is just excited to go and play the next game now we’re so high on confidence.”
