Ben Nelson reacts to Saturday's 2-1 reverse at Southampton in the Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round
Oliver Skipp equalised Cyle Larin's penalty, but James Bree's extra-time header settled the tie
Nelson has called the squad to recover quickly from the disappointment
We head to Stoke City in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday (12:30pm GMT kick-off)
Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round defeat at Southampton was our seventh game without a victory, which alongside a six point deduction, has seen us slip into the bottom three of the second tier standings. Results must improve and quickly, with a trip to Stoke City on Saturday the second of a three-game run of away fixtures in all competitions. Reflecting on that reverse at St. Mary’s Stadium, the second against the Saints in a week, Nelson found positives in the performance despite the result on South Coast. “After how well we played and dominating possession, I think, in both halves and even in extra-time, we felt like we dominated,” the Academy graduate said.
“It’s just a sucker blow to, in the key moments, let ourselves down and concede both goals.
“Performances are getting much better and we feel better in ourselves in the way that we’re playing. We’re trying to put across Kingy’s ideas and all the other coaches, but in those key moments, we’re letting ourselves down. It’s hard for us.”
First Team Coach Andy King, currently overseeing the squad, handed Nelson the captain’s armband for the tie at Southampton – a source of pride for the 21-year-old, who has emerged through the Academy at the Football Club to reach the senior side.
“Obviously, I’ve been at the Club since I was eight, so to go all that way and wear the armband, it was such a proud moment for me,” he added.
“It’s a big positive. [I found out] today, in the meeting before the game. I still need to keep building and being consistent with my leadership and helping along my team-mates, keep building that part of my game.
“I feel like that helps me and gives confidence to me to keep going.”
Focus now switches to Saturday’s trip to bet365 Stadium, to face 14th-placed Stoke, and Nelson says we must focus on our work to get wins on the board.
“We can’t dwell,” he explained. “We can’t feel sorry for ourselves or anything. We’ve got to just keep working on the training pitch and performing the best we can. We’ll get our slice of luck at some point.”
